They want to eat our food, and enjoy our inventions...but they are so jealous of America. We basically ignore them anyways. Do you agree they are jealous?

And yes the war in Iraq isn't cool. But what of France invading Vietnam in the 50's? What of the former Soviet Union attacking Afganistan before we did?

Thank you Warmech for a well thought out answer. And to the feller below that said Vietnam wasn't invaded by France, and called me ignorant...colonialism is an invasion of a sovereign nation.

And to everyone who went on for my "support" of the war, review my question. I believe I stated that the war was indeed not cool. ;)

People have the annoying tendency to only remember that most recent thing that has happened. You can be friends with someone for your entire life, but then have one really nasty fight with them and never talk again. You forget everything that came before and just remember the recent argument. That is pretty much the situation with how Europe feels about the US. We have had a few rough years in our relationship and they are mad at us and are now ignoring the decades where they admired us.

However no matter how mad they might be at us at the moment they have grown to appreciate our movies, food, and other such things. They have grown to enjoy much of our culture and no one likes to give up on things that make them happy. So they eat at a McDonalds in Belgium while discussing how uncivilized we are because of Iraq or other such things and never see the irony.

It may be really hypocritical and maybe part jealousy, but people have a tendency to avoid thinking of themselves that way. It is only a phase though, we will do something they approve of later on, or maybe we will rescue France from the Germans again or something like that and they will admire America again. It is not that much different from the way co-workers or friends act with each other every day in our normal lives, just on a much larger scale.

France never invaded Vietnam in the 1950's Indo-China as it was called under the French, was one of their old colonies.

Another settlement of the French was called New Orleans and Louisiana is populated by many French descendants.

It took hundreds of thousands of European immigrants to build America into what it has become today, along with the Chinese helping to construct your railways!!!

Your post fails to be a rant by a long shot, it shows though how truly ignorant you are of life in Europe and even of your own America.

Hey Ghost, thanks for the IM: not sure I can understand your meaning with your poor English skills, so I will post a copy here for others to see:

Your Post to me: "Subject: Colonialism is an invasion to the nations it is invading. So you show your ignorance when you acuse me of showing mine. Good day beeoch." End of your post.

Would "beeoch" be B I T C H ?? If so I have been called worse in over 21 years in the military you also spelt accuse wrong and your rant is still a failure.

Well, first and foremost it's the US government's imperialist policies that people hate, not the country itself. Also, the US is just the poster child of these policies, so it's an easy target. And the American right have a severe superiority complex, which doesn't help.

And just because you hate a country's foreign policy, doesn't mean you hate it's movies, TV shows and music. America is packed with great people who can make great things worthy of praise. You just have to stop looking at it in black and white terms.

if you think europe is anti american, then you are completely deluded.

yes, france did stupid crap in indochina and then passed it on to us. the ussr did a lot of stuff that was not cool at all. however, two wrongs do not make a right and our actions in the middle east still should be rightly criticized by the world, regardless if the world has done things like that in the past.

it's called "learning from your mistakes." america should try it sometime.

They love our culture , fashion , music, and now even food. But if American's hate the current administration , I could imagine Europe. And we payed the Afghanis money to fight the soviets. It''s how the USA started working alongside Osama Bin Laden.

American entertainment does not invade countries, kill and harm people, affect the standard of living by controlling the financial markets, nor does it force issues to make governments comform to their style of living... it entertains.

There are a number of "Hollywood types" who I adore on screen but can't stand in real life.

Entertainment and real life are two different things.

g-day!

Why is USA so unidimensional?

Countries have no identity. They don't think or act by themselves. You're talking about people. And you're going to find all kind of different ideas from people of the same country.

Why is USA so anti-China but obsessed with its products?

Again, it's not the USA. It's some of its people. I hear them complaining about China, its policies and the way they wave the US debt in your noses. But Walmart sales are no the rise and they have shelves and shelves packed with chinese crap.
It's the same. Just because you have a different of opinions on one subject doesn't mean that you don't appreciate the good side of a country.

This concept of Europe (or the rest of the world) being jealous of USA is childlish. It may make you feel better but it's really really bad for you. I'll be nice and pretend that you're right. While you think that your way of life is the best in the world (that's because the rest is so jealous) your freedom is taken away from you. With your money...
You have to support the troops, they're fighting for you. What are you going to get out of this? nothing. The same nothing your elders got from Korea, Vietnam, even WWII.
One million citizens dead as a consequence of violent crime? not an issue. Better move billions in resources to "reconstruct" Iraq (you have to level the country first...).
Is it hard to get a job today? Not really if you're willing to forget you college degree and get a mop. Productive work? what for? it's cheaper in the far east. Is that an issue? No, why. It's better to move billions in resources to hunt Bin Laden... unsuccessfully... for 6 years...

Do you see the problem now? Forget about the rest of the world. What you're doing is a natural human response to crisis and the government is helping you with propaganda. You twist your own perception of reality putting the blame outside, getting a morale leverage. Your perception is that they're all worse than you and that you're the best. Even if you have problems up to your nose making your life miserable every day. But, once you set your mind in the right perspective, your problems don't count anymore. Someone is worse and that someone envies you. Problem solved... but only in your perception.

It's not an USA problem. All socialist democracies are going down. Economically, politically, freedom wise. Commerce and industry can't grow in such tight environment where each dollar of real wealth is squeezed out of more than 60% to support bureaucracy, wars in your case, social (non productive) programs, police state policies. Under such scenario, why would anyone want to create a business?

The invasion of Vietnam in the 50's was wrong. Same with Korea in the 60's, Vietnam in the 70's, etc etc etc.
That's not an excuse for Iraq. But, again, forget about the rest of the world. The war is draining your resources in money and in lives. Dead people is not productive. It's not convenient economically . It's not directed to the people that attacked you in 9/11. It's morally wrong. It's not getting the results expected. This is arguably because there's no goal besides the invasion itself but I'd say that it's useless from a practical point of view, too much invested and no gain economically or otherwise. The war was initiated by the executive without following the protocol required by law. Even if the Congress decides to look the other way, the war is illegal.

Your vision of the war in Iraq not being "cool" is so simplistic, so unidimensional. It's not a ball game, it's a war. Your people is dying there and, as you can see, for no reason. The rest of the world is claiming for the people of Iraq that are living in the middle of a war and being targeted as the enemy. Their country is being destroyed in front of their eyes and, once the US army goes away, they're going to be there left alone and pushed a hundred years back in history. But it's the people of Iraq, not your problem. I'll grant you the right to be selfish and shallow. What I want you to think is what are you getting out of this? The perception of moral leverage is going to fade away in time. You can fool yourself (and everyone else) for a while but sooner or later reality is going to hit you. It's hitting you now. Every time you try to board a plane with a bottle of water. Every time you buy that bottle of water made overseas and more expensive than yesterday. Every time you loose your job and can't find another. Every time you see an abandoned house because the owner couldn't pay the mortgage and the credit company don't want to put the house in a market where nobody is buying. Every time you see a business close because it's not viable to produce with the burden of the government in your shoulders. Every time you want to eat a potato chip and you can't because the government is taking the decisions for you.

But, so far, you're doing great. Everyone else in the world is doing worse in your perception so no reason to worry at all.
And if, someday, the government picks you up and sends you to a labor camp to work the land for your daily cup of rice, don't worry. I'm sure we can find someone doing worse than that.

They oppose American foreign policies, not foreign entertainment from America.

Besides, who really benefits here? Are American entertainment producers just blessing people like me with their fine moving pictures and video games as a sign of good will, or are they indirectly making money off me? It's a win-win situation.
