I have an oval face, but quite plump cheeks so it looks a bit round sometimes. Would a long-medium shag look Ok on my face, or would it just make it look rounder? My hair is quite thick and currently reaches my shoulder blades.
Also, does anyone have any other style recommendations?

Wispy ends are more flattering to a round face than blunt, one-length ends that widen the face.

Short hair is tricky on round faces because they don't add length and many short cuts add width to the sides of the face -- a no-no for round faces. Avoid bobs if you have a round face, especially if you were also blessed with a short neck. Any blunt cut at the chin will accentuate roundness.
If you opt for short hair, make sure you have layers cut in, as Mandy does in this picture. Layers add height, which you need when your face is as wide as it is long.

Why this look on Mandy Moore works:

Long, side-sweeping bangs are universally flattering to all face shapes, but work especially well on women with round faces.

You never want short hair to fall flat against the sides of the head. Mandy's hair here has a lot of body, which is a must for a round face.

Oval faces can wear pretty much ANY hair style they like...even if you have a heart shaped face...you'll look good in just about anything you like.
I know....I have the same shaped face. The only time it matters is after say age 55, if you get the sagging of your jowls....then the longer hair kind of accentuates those and make you look sad or mad more. I keep it chin length and kinda like Posh Spice's hair and it looks young and sassy!
Good luck!

I love mine, but it requires more cutting than a straight longer style. If I don't go to the stylist, I look like I have a mullet and people start calling me Kyle because they think I'm their male friend!

Usually, which too long for me. I believe it depends on the guy and also his face though. Certain guys can easily pull off long hair and other folks can't.
