Yes, Jerry, many believe this would be key and has been spoken of for years.
It appears as I have read the previous responses that many are making a statement on something they're rather clueless about.
It would not be a "pay increase" and while you are deployed overseas, keyword deployed, your wages are not taxed with the incentive of combat pay.
Many civillians couldnt even come close to making ends meet with their lifestyles they have. Also, much of our money goes right back into the Army with purchases of new uniforms, patches, crests, and boots. And i assure you none of this is cheap, inexpensive ongoing purchase. Also, given our very frugal means, approx 30% is taken by taxes.
Lower income - 30% - military equipment/uniforms (-possible family) = very little means to live well let alone even prosper.
Sounds like some of the few need to join themselves and get their rear into shape and learn something before they speak of it.

Yes they should but they won't. It would be fair however if the government would help them write off there uniforms and armor they must have as a tax deduction, just like those who work in the Congress, and bigger forms of government, can when they have to travel and the like, for their jobs. Heck while away on business most can even write off their phone calls home..
So if you think about it, they put their lives on the line, have no voice, no money, make after all is said and done, only about 13,000 after tax to live on..
Having said that, who is giving them fair treatment?.

Since less than 1% of the American population is in the uniformed services, probably not allot of "huge" tax increases coming from them being tax free.

Sure, why not.
I don't think it would have a huge impact on the national economy, but all the rest of the taxpayers would be responsible for making up the difference.
Do you have any idea how much of an increase that would be for the rest of us? Would you be willing to pay an extra $2000 per year to offset their windfall?
g-day!

Not only should soldiers' pay be tax-free for those 'grunts' who serve in the depths of Hell, they should be paid what our 'honorable' members of Congress are paid, including benefits, extraordinary health care and lifetime pensions.
It's these guys, after all, who put their lives on the line.
Hot-shot commanders, five-star generals, and other military hoity-toities should work for minimum wage, just as all members of Congress should work for minimum wage. -RKO- 10/04/07

How many special privileges and benefits can you give military members before it's too much? Why single out the military for tax free pay when one could argue that policemen, firemen, teachers, doctors et all provide services just as essential and important?
Being a soldier isn't a special super-citizenship that's granted in exchange for going overseas to fight wars, it's a job. All jobs should pay taxes.

If the military didn't have to pay taxes that is a lot of money that the civilian population would have to pic up. Meaning Taxes would skyrocket.

I do agree that it sounds good in theory but thinking on it, the higher rank you go in the defence force, the higher your pay is anyway. If they can't make ends meet, why are they doing this job?
