do you have other remotes in the house?

We had a similar issue until we discovered our universal remote had auto detected all the TVs so no matter where you are in the house if the power was hit at all other TVs would go on depending on the proximity to another TV. This applies to the volume as on the set as well.

So do you live in an Apartment (that would be close proximity) or where you turning on a different TV or stereo? Because if someone else's remote auto detected your TV or your stereo remote auto detected your TV that could be the explanation.

The volume varies considerably from show to show, during commercials, etc., even though the actual output power from the broadcasting station has to remain at a certain level. There's a technical explanation, but the bottom line is that the volume vary considerably at any setting you use.
Some Philips sets have an automatic level control you can turn on, and it evens out those big differences. Maybe you had this feature turned on before and inadvertently turned it off.
You didn't say that you had to keep turning the volume up at other times, so maybe this won't help you.
Also, did you keep turning it down to the same level as displayed on the screen, or to where you could stand it?
Philips has a really good customer service tech line -- give them a call and they'll most likely be able to sort this out for you.
And one more thing -- is there possibly another remote someone in the vicinity could be using?

Hi

You may find its the 13 amp plug arcing in the socket? When they changed the design to make them safer with the plastic halfway down the pins they now arc sometimes and on digital sets for some reason it can effect the sound.I scratched the metal areas of the pins and had no problems after that.Mine was not a Philips brand set.

bye

Check all your settings, if you cannot find anything in your book or remote, then call the help line in the book. If this don't get figued out, then take it back before the 30 days is up. Good Luck.

It could be the timer, or some weird feature. You might have to suck it up and call tech support, which you should do soon, because I had an old tv that did the same thing right before it conked out on me. Good luck!

Some people have clever little gadgets that they can
turn the TV up and down or change channels or even
some nearby whose TV remote is inadvertly affecting
your TV.

I've heard it is possible for your neighbours remote to occasionally effect your TV. I think this is more likely than the ghost theory!
