It all depends on your skill level and tool access. I have made them out of silver dollars, antelope horn, elkhorn, an old brooch my grand mother had etc. It's not easy to explain the process, but basically it entails finding something you you like , that will fit the area you want to put it on, or that can be ground down to fit without destroying the item. before installing it, you need to drill out the old screw hole (if there is one) so that a small wooden dowl will fit in the hole. Then glue the dowl in place, let it dry, trim the dowl off flush with the stock. meantime, drill a new screw hole in the center of item you are using ( I use a sounded head screw and counter drill the item slightly so the screw head does not stick out).
Then drill a new hole in the stock that is slightly smaller that the screw you are installing. start the screw, then put a little parafin on the threads and run it in firm. That's it in a simplified format.

You could make a sand cast and cast your own grip cap from pewter, aluminum or steel if you have foundry setup.
Brownells has a good selection of plastic and steel grip caps for you to select from.

It is possible to take a piece of flat Urethane or PVC plastic and cut it to fit. Try using a thick piece of paper as a template, and grind to fit. If a contour is needed, the plastic can be bent over heat, and installed hot in order to fit the stock.

buy a piece of ebony (wood) or a different piece of wood.
Sand the bottom of the grip flat.
Use an epoxy or fiberglass resin (like brownell's acraglass) and glue on the new chunk of wood.
After the glue has set (usually 24 hours later) sand the wood to match the contours of the stock. Use Tru-oil to finish the wood, matching the finish on the rest of the stock.

While it would be fairly easy to make one, it would hardly be practical to do. I would suggest you check with Numrich Arms/Gun Parts Corporation, at www.e-gunparts.com. Find yourself a surplus over-sized grip cap and cut it down to fit your particular rifle. You could find an inexpensive one for just a few dollars, and just as easily work it to the dimensions you need..........
