Can't make an appointment for today at the vets - whats the best way to get rid of ticks? I'm a bit nervous as someone told me they have a constant blood supply - any ideas?

When pulling ticks off, always use an slow anti clockwise twisting action, the little buggers turn themselves into your dog clockwise, why I do not know, but they do. If they are sheep ticks (small pea like things) they come out easily with your fingers, but if they are deer ticks (hard brown little things) they need tweezers.
Don't waste money at the vets it's so easy to do yourself, not nice, but easy!

You can buy tick removers from the pet store, or go to the pet store and buy some Flea and Tick spray. Just spray it on and it kills the tick, takes a couple of days to fall off but its not sucking your dogs blood in the meantime.

Your best bet is to learn how to pull them off. It's really not difficult once you learn how. The other methods mentioned here don't always work, but pulling them off always does. DON'T use a cigarette! Doing so sometimes makes them just burrow deeper into the animal, and you also might end up burning your pet. Make sure you get the whole thing, though. I usually use a tissue as you can get a better grip on it, but some people prefer using tweezers. After you get it off, dab some rubbing alcohol on the place where it was. Make sure your pet has a product such as Frontline on it (and applied monthly) so in the future the ticks and fleas won't be a problem.

good ideas, but in the future, use
Frontline. I've used it for about
ten years on my dogs and cats--
I haven't seen a tick or flea since.
( a little leery about the bleach and
pine sol bath thing that someone
else suggested, kinda think it could
make your dog sick )

you have to pull them out with tweezerss. put the tweezer right down to the skin level and pull out gently making sure that the head is removed as well as this can cause an infection. front-line will not kill the ticks immediately but once they have had their fill and dropped off they will then die.

I soak cottonwool in alchohol and squeeze it over the tick, in a few hours it will get groggy and loosen it's hold then you can pull it out with a tweezers. Make sure you grip it tightly and get the head out.

i kno lots of people who burn them of with a cigarette or insence stick..depends were the tick is. local pet shops sell creams. i use vaseline and cover the tick all over, it suffocates them so they have to drop off. putting tea tree on can help...so long as the tick isnt too near the head/nose! good luck
