It takes a long time. Other factors that affect drying time are humidity, temperature, type of canvas, and how thickly you applied the paint. I have had a couple that took weeks to dry. This is not always a bad thing though as slow drying oil paints give you more time for blending and "shaping" as opposed to fast drying acrylic paints.

In the future you may want to consider using a product called "Japan dryer." Mix it with your paint medium as you are painting. Here's a good recipe 1/3 linseed oil + 1/3 Damar varnish + 1/3 solvent (turpentine or mineral spirits) and 2 - 3 drops of Japan dryer. Use this with your oil paints when you paint and your painting will be dry the next day. Make sure you only use a samll amount or it will cause darkening or cracking.

That is the reason why artists love oil paint, they can leave the painting and still come back and change it after lunch.

If you need quick drying paint try acrylic. Even when it is very thick it still shouldn't take longer than 30 minutes to (tops) overnight if it is realllly thick.

Also, one brand of paint makes an acrylic that mixes and acts like an oil, but still dries quick. I can't remember the brand right now, but they came and did a demonstration at my art school last year.

Your painting could take anywhere from days to weeks to be dry to the touch. Underneath the surface, the paint will be drying and curing for months.

This is normal. It is the nature of the medium.

You might want to pick up some books about oil painting techniques.

Oils are notorious for being slow drying. This allows you to go back and change things more easily. There are certain agents that you can add to your paints that make them dry more quickly.
