As a testament to His glory - like any great artist or craftsman:

Psa 8:3 When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained;

Psa 8:4 What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?

Psa 8:5 For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour.

Psa 8:6 Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all [things] under his feet:

Psa 8:7 All sheep and oxen, yea, and the beasts of the field;

Psa 8:8 The fowl of the air, and the fish of the sea, [and whatsoever] passeth through the paths of the seas.

Psa 8:9 O LORD our Lord, how excellent [is] thy name in all the earth!

Perhaps because the gravitational pull of the nearest planets help to keep us on our axis? Or perhaps because they protect us from the majority of hostile objects that could lead to the extinction of all life on this planet? Seriously, when was the last time a meteorite or something similar collided with the earth and killed most living creatures?

In English: Of course we cannot tell what is the exact reason why God did so,,,But on the other hand, we can still make guesses...What if it is all part of His plan after all??
