The average wage in Australia is around $49,000 a year

It really depends on what job you are doing and what your lifestyle you lead - for example where you are living and what type of house or apartment you are renting or buying. Sydney is more expensive to live in than Brisbane for instance.

For Australian federal wages and conditions of employment go to::: http://www.wagenet.gov.au/WageNet/HomePage/HomePage.asp

Look at an average $230 a week rent for a 2 bedroom apartment, $100 a week on food if it's just you, $100 a month on electricity, transport, entertainment and medical costs you must include in your budget as the bare minimum.

Not sure, it is a while since I worked for an hourly rate. But I guess it would be around the $18 per hour in most jobs. If your single with no mortgage etc and dont live beyond your means, you can survive quite well on that.
