Two different regoins, and I would imagine different default languages for the menu. Possibly different voltages on the power supply as well.

While PS3 games are not region-coded. DVD movies, Blu-Ray movies, PS2 games, and PS1 games all are region-coded.

The differences are when you buy the PS3 in Japan, there are some feautures that they offers in Japan but not in US. Therefore, if you use it in US it might not work at all. And vice versa( or the other way around.)

I have NTSC PAL which plays any thing.

Tecnically - minor differences. American and japanese versions are better, than European (backwards compatibility - correct only for 20GB and 60GB versions). Also japanese has an extra point in menu for internet, but it's important only for japanese residents.
