I'm having what feels like muscle pain on the outside of my left hip. I feel it when i'm laying down, sitting cross-legged, or standing up and bending my knees (that's when its really bad). It almost feels like its cramping a little and is hard to straighten back out. I am 22 years old, and i broke my right ankle in June of this year, and I was on crutches (with my left leg being dominant of course) for 9 weeks. is it possible that the pain in my hip is related to it?

Yes its very possible.
When there is an injury you compensate by utilizing the other side more, so in effect the left side has been doing more than 50% of the work (probably 60 - 90%), and the extra strain has resulted in muscle pain.
If you are still over compensating for the right ankle, then it will continue. A physiotherapist may be of assistance here.

Absolutely it can have everything to do with your ankle fracture. As you heal and begin to use your ankle again you may be bearing weight differently than you did when it was perfect (before the fracture). Keep a self diary on what makes it hurt worse or less to show to the orthopedic doctor you have been using. Some Physical Therapy might be helpful to you while getting better. If you are weight bearing in an "odd"way from normal, you can easily have hip pain, low back pain, even~~and not a joke~~shoulder pain, as you are throwing your whole body OFF in the way you plant your recently fractured ankle. I'd let the orthopedic MD know what is going on and get some therapy before your body gets used to the different position and gives you other issues like you are talking about, forever.

It is probably a combination - bad footwear could be the source - I would go and buy good shoes - in the store let them watch you running. But it could also come from the back. For a long time I would get horrible pains in my knees when I tried to run and it took a couple of doctors to find out that the problem was actually my back. Now, that is fixed and I am running happily every day.

Yes, the body has shifted the weight structure to the uninjured side. You may need to chat with a physical therapist who can recommend exercises to change that....
