Self-preservation. In fact, it's our own carnal drives for self-preservation that drive a lot of belief for people who would otherwise feel helpless and desperate.

just look at the pope for example! he is not holy and he certainly isn't a great person! he is delusional however by waving like the Queen of England , and pretending he gives a rip!
hence he was elected and he has moucho grande moula and some worldly power!
