So I donated blood at work today, and when I was going through the pre-screening, the lady said "Oh, your Iron is high." I think she then wrote down either a 117 or 177(couldn't tell with her handwriting) but anyway, I started wondering about that afterwards.

Is this something I should be really concerned about?

Also, I know there is some genetic thing that causes you to absorb more iron than you need. There are some people on my father's side who had high iron(found out after mentioning this to my dad) but I don't know about my mothers side.

Is the test for this complicated/expensive? Is it something I should look into having done?

Or is high Iron one of those things that it's not ideal, but not serious either?

I was put on a 3 month course of Iron Supplements once for Anemia. (my iron levels were low) and I asked my gp if one can have too much iron and he said yes. He didn't elaborate but because he said Yes, if I were you I would have a blood test done. It didn't cost me anything to have a blood test as I had it bulk billed. You should do it to put your mind at rest at least.

That's a very good question to ask your DOCTOR!

Call them and ask one of the nurses! They should be able to give you good advice over the phone!
