You might not forget how many different nationalities live in Dubai and the UAE in general. All these people coming from different cultures and were brought up different. I agree with you, that every person should be treated with respect. But - did you ever realize what maybe looks being careless or sounds rude to you, it will not feel the same for the other person. This has nothing to do with rasiscm.

Let me give you some examples and forgive me for generalizing. I do know that not all people of one nationality are the same, okay?

Asians (Chinese and Philippinas): Did you ever realize how many philippinian cashiers treat western women? They make a face like their chewing a lemon. Where as, when a western
man shows up, their smile can not be big enough.
You go to certain bars and clubs? What do you see? A bunch of Asian girls lined up to get picked up by older men with a western or european passport.
Want to buy some cosmetics in i.e. at Carrefour? Be sure a Philippina stands there protecting lipsticks like they are hers.

Indinans: Go to Fatima Supermarkt (where is not much room) and Indian ladies force their way through the alleys with full force of their bodies. No excuse me or anything. The Indian staff talks to each other while they hand you your veggies and you have the feeling you bother them by buying something.
If you have a question, the Indians start shaking their head like otherwise no words would come out. It also must be an Indian custom while shopping to leave the cart standing in the middle of the way.

Indonesians: mostly maids who's face hardly never shows an impression and you mostly have to say the same thing a couple times bevore they understand what you want.

Brits: not to many respect the Islamic culture and you see them even during Ramadan wearing shorts and tank tops. Even when they wear a size where they never should wear clothes like that.

Iranians and Afghanis: These sales persons will not accept a "no thank you" if you tell them nice. In their shops you get treated like you are not suppose to have your own will and you are to dumb to know yourself what you want to buy.

Indians and Pakistanis on the road: needless to loose any words about it. No lane disciplin and the indicator seems to be unknown. In the parking lot you see them sitting on cars no matter if they belong to them or not (no, they do not belong to them!) and some of the Pakistani cab driver are some of the worse people I ever met.

You see, some nationalities bring careless or rude behaivior they receive from others on theirself. Same with prejustice. But what seems to be normal for them looks rude and careless to others and verce versa.

With a little bit more understanding of each others culture and backgrounds it should be possible to enjoy life, learning to be a little bit more tolerant to each other and respect a person for what he/she is. You all came here to make a better living and the UAE depends on foreign workforce.

Take care and stand up for your right next time you feel like getting treated wrong.

Well since Ive been in Dubai i really havent seen to much racism only cause i dint interact with the people there most of the time i run into really nice people but im there Like 2 days at a time so i didnt get a chance to really see what people are really like. Plus i talk to people from other countries like India, Pakistan, Africa, Philippines anyway Ive really never met a person actually from Dubai. Plus people are constantly trying to sell me thing every time im out. I didnt like the fact that I'm always spending when I'm there. Now when i go to the mall and shop till i drop people do stare at me hard i dont know maybe they think im a hooker. Cause im a young black female.... I dont know Plus they do stare at me and boyfriend who is white hard. Man that is really sad that we cant get away from racism anywhere we go i mean is there any place where there isnt racims?

I only experienced Dubai International airport, and found a lot of people to be very sexist and rude. Arab men seemed to have a thing about pushing in front on non-Arabs.

A doctor who lived in Dubai for a few years told me that there is a huge amount of racism there, and that she was treated very badly because she was Indian and because she was a woman.

Some people ( from all nationalities) are rude, some are unkind , some are very selfish and some are greedy ( business & shop wise) . It is the odd few kind people that stand out and make you thankful there are good people around. One time I had surgery, I dropped something on the floor and couldn't pick it up but the local guy in Carrefour ( Abu Dhabi) told me not to worry, he came from his counter and picked it up. Then just the other day, I was taking shopping from the trolley and this kind old Asian man took everything out and put it on the counter for me. So, when you remember the kindness of the odd few. You forget the rudeness of others. May God reward their kindness.

Luckily no, I don't normally see any racism in my everyday life. My girlfriend just got back from Dubai after two months, she's half Persian and has never been hassled for her race. Apparently the people there were really disrespectful to her because she was a woman though. It sucks that someone can be seen as a lesser person just because of their sex or race.

Yes yes yes!!!!! I do agree with you that there is racist here everywhere.

If you are European, you will not feel it so much, unless you are facing with the local. But if you are Asian, you will got problem with almost every nation! They thought that if you are Asian, you are poor, stupid and cannot speak English.

Example?

1. The staffs at the boutique hardly count how many pieces you bring in the fitting room if you are European. But if you Asian, they almost go inside the room with you.

2. Once, I went to Flairmont Hotel for dinner. Afterthat, I was waiting for a cab in front of the hotel. The staff call a cab and offer the cab to the British couple who came after me. They denied to take the taxi, still, the staff insisted that I can wait. Who said so?????? After that, I went to complain with the Duty Manager, show them my business card and I ve got a free limo home.

3. If you are not European and you go to the bar, first impression is you are a hooker.

There are more more and more to tell. But i dont wanna think about it anymore.

I have to agree with you. If anyone says people are not racist in dubai then they are kidding themseves. Everyone has a chip on their shoulder and each and every nationality thinks they are better than the other.

You should have been more specific when you said "careless". Do you mean driving? Do you mean rude? What?
I have to agree with H that so many different cultures are living in the UAE and just as many different things may be percieved to be rude in one culture and not in another. You are looking at it through your eyes and I will tell you my experience as a Western expat.

NOT MEANT TO OFFEND AND DOES NOT APPLY TO EVERYONE IN THESE GROUPS

Indians: hacking sound with their throats, spitting on the ground, not standing in line and taking their turn at taxi stands, banks or anywhere, offensive body odor

Filipinos: agree w/ H--always smiling and flirting w/ white males trying to get their passport/nationality, totally misunderstanding most orders in the restaurants and giving the cusomer whatever instead of asking for a clarification, sneakily breaking the taxi lines

Pakistanis: offensive body odor, aggressive behavior and taxi driving

Arab men: always pushing females out of the way to first get to the door, line, etc.--shameful, some are way to flirty w/ Western girls and lie about their marital status (includes Egyptian males here)

Brits--I agree w/ H again, totally disrespectful of the dress code and culture here even to the point of trying to rationalize going topless at the beach, they totally ignore Ramadan etiquette

And the aggressive/rude/non-signaling/ extreme lane-changing/ pedistrain threatening or ignoring/horn blowing/impatient/speeding/
dangerous drivers out there. You know who you are and your behaviour is unfortunately the norm instead of the exception here.

And to all that trash up the beaches and the grounds because you can't be bothered to walk and deposit it in the bin---shame. Especially if it is not your country---who are you to trash it up???

People (and their children) that treat their maids and other employees disprespectfully by not paying them, assaulting them and abusing them in any way will be punished by God, I am sure of it.

So you see, my friend, we all see things differently through our own eyes and compare it to what we are used to in our homeland. If somebody is rude it says more about them than you so buck up and get on with your life.

well, sure, kind of..i mean is there any place where racism is non-existant?but then ,i wouldn't say that one group of people are more racist than the others, 'cause that doesn't make me any better than them..personally, i feel a lot of Asians face more discrimination here than people of other continents....people have these notions about certain people, and we're always being stereotyped..for instance, Asians are mostly seen as cheap and financially not so efficient, Westerners as someone who is rich and snobby etc..i've seen quiote a lot of racism around here, but mostly just ignore it..by being racist, they are simply ruining themselves, and sure, the victims do feel very bad, but eventually it is they who'll suffer the most..
