Now, I've seen LOTS of unfortunately foolish people asking "Why are Atheists in R&S?"

I thought that Christianity advocated the idea that atheism is similar to another quote-unquote "religion"

So.. According to them, its a religion, but its not allowed in the Religion category because its not a religion....

?

Chieko:

Go to a pastor. Ask him this question:

"Is Atheism a religion?"

They will say yes.

When religious people want to exclude atheists from something they say its not a religion.
When religious people want to imply that atheism is no better than religion they say that it is a religion, just like all the others.

Atheism is a lack of belief in god(s)
A religion is a set of beliefs

Atheism isn't a religion by definition, but it's really the same as saying that white isn't a color. What are you going to call it then?

I think atheism belongs with religion and spirituality because the LACK of spiritual beliefs constitutes spirituality in itself. Buddhism, for example, makes no decree either way about whether or not there is a god. Some Buddhists (particularly in Japan I think) believe in deities. Others don't, and are technically atheistic (by the definition), but that doesn't mean they don't believe in ANYTHING. By that same token, atheists can have "Christian" morals and a way of living.

Clever question.

a religion is: any strongly held albeit unprovable belief system by which one seeks to explain life and the nature of the world around them.

Face it Atheism is unprovable and through it people seek to explain life. As such it is a "faith system". If you can't rock solid prove something you have to take it on "faith".

The only way we could deny that it was a religion is if Atheists were truly neutral on the subject of God or gods spiritual issues. They are not however neutral.

While the bald == hair color was cute it misses the fact. For example just because a I have a (-5) and it stands in exact opposition to +5 does not mean it ceases to be a number.

The sum of the argument is this, Atheists embrace your belief system for what it is! If it brings you peace and joy then all the better. It is however a belief system.

Atheism isnt a religion. Its a an idea and dogma which thinks about the notion of the non-existance of divine beings.

it's great that your vision is good enough to see the question, "why are atheists in R&S?"...and not surprising that you don't see any meaningful answers.

i think i missed the passage in the bible where atheists were referred to as a religion and to be honest, i think you're making up what Christians advocate...for whatever personal vendetta...

so in keeping with the spirit of your trolling, you create a straw argument to keep the unpleasantness going...

wait...let me guess...you're an atheist.

the reference to atheism is a religion is simply, *pot, kettle, black*. there are atheists who've given atheism the qualities of a religion.

And bald is a hair color?

The person who is certain, and who claims divine warrant for his certainty, belongs to the infancy of our species."
Thousands of years pass, cultural forces work their magic, and primordial superstitions acquire a near-universal legitimacy and certitude, no matter their assault on reason or contradiction of fact.

They also believe that an all knowing 'loving' father created a place of eternal torture for some of his beloved creation. I don't think they really think things through..

Logic doesn't work with these people. They only use it when it suits their needs. Kinda reminds me of this:

"Everything has a creator so god must have created it all"

"So then who created god?"

"God wasn't created, he was always there"

"But I thought you just said everything has to be created..."

"Everything but god of course. He always existed."

Makes perfect sense, doesn't it?? NOT!!

I love your question, but I suspect a lot of people aren't going to 'get it'. Anyway, to actually answer:

Don't expect logic and reason to work on people who by nature of their religious beliefs openly reject both. Casting your pearls before swine, and all that...
