Omeprazole (Prilosec) one of the meds known as Proton Pump inhibitors. They decrease gastric acid secretion. These are long acting meds used in patients with gastric reflux, gastric pain, peptic ulcer and prevention of gastritis. Other meds from this category are Protonix, Nexium,Aciphex and Prevacid. Common side effects may be nausea, abdominal pain, fatigue, headache (which are common side effects for almost any med). In my experience, these meds are really effective and well tolerated.

Please call your pharmacy or any Walgreen's pharmacy and let them explain to you. Never take any medicine without understanding what you have been given and why. Your life may depend on you asking these kinds of questions. I had to do this very same kind of question today for a new prescription I was given. It's part of the pharmacies service to explain things, don't feel like your are bugging them. They are always glad to help you understand so you can make the most of your doctor's plans to help you.

Good luck, hope you get better soon! :)
