How do i put my 1992 Toyota Pickup into 4x4. (hilux)?

Bought it a week or so ago.
Didnt have a user manual.
And what are those turning things on the wheels for.
Its a manual trans.

ok, first things first. DO NOT ENGAGE 4WD ON TARRED ROADS. it will damage your transmission, transfer case, front cv's and front axles.

when you want 4wd you need to lock the front hubs (those turny things on the front wheels). they turn from a marking of free to lock about 3/4 of a full turn.

second get into cab and start engine. you have 2 gear levers. one is long and near you (gears) and the other is short and on the other side (transfer case). the tranfer case lever should be in 2wd normally. clutch in and move the transfefr lever to either 4wd high or 4wd low (these different ranges of speeds available, 4wd high is like 2wd but with all 4 wheels turning. 4wd low is a crawler. you could climb a wall with it). now select 1st gear with the long (gear) lever and you are away.

remember though, when you have finished having fun, return transfer cas lever to 2wd and unlock front hubs (turn them from lock to free, 3/4 of a turn the other way)

if your hubs wont move or the transfer case lever wont move, time for a service. and maybe you can ask them show you how.

The selectable front hubs connect or disconnect each wheel from the front axleshafts.

In order to send power to the front wheels, you have to make 2 connections...lock the front hubs to connect the wheels to the front driveline and then shift the transfer case into 4H or 4L to lock the front driveline to the rest of the driveline.

You can also leave the front hubs locked and have a shift-on-the-fly system. With the front hubs locked, you can shift from 2H to 4H and back at any speed (the manual says under 50mph but that's just legal mumbo jumbo). You don't even have to push in the clutch. To shift into 4-L you should be stopped or going very slow (under 5 mph).

Then when you don't think you'll be needing 4wd, unlock the front hubs to save the front end some wear and give you a little better MPG and power.

You also have the option of 2-LO. Just leave the hubs unlocked and shift the transfer case into 4-L. Now you have low gearing that you can use on the pavement without binding things up when you turn. I use it for backing up trailers. Just be gentle with it...that's quite a bit of torque for just the rear end to handle.
