Actually, the concept of hell has been twisted to scare people into doing what's right.
It's hard to go into it all here, but the original use of the word "hell" literally meant a place empty of God. Hell would be best described as nothing happening to you after you die. No chance resurrection. The wages of sin is death, not eternal torture.
So, the punishment is death, the reward is life.

If you believe the Bible ,you have to believe in both places because the Bible speaks of both. Nowhere in the Bible will you find an in between place (purgatory). While both places are very real, the Bible speaks more about Hell than it does Heaven simply because God never intended for anyone to go there and He wants to warn people about that place. It was a place created for Satan and his (Satan's) angels. But because people choose to follow Satan, they choose his destiny. For those who believe that the grave is the final abode they need to read Revelation 20:10; 15."And the devil that decieved them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night (I would call that punishment). Verse 15 says,"And whosoever was not found written in the book of life (the book that tells who made their choice to go to Heaven),was cast into the lake of fire. So, to answer your ?, Life in a fire Would be punishment, and Life Not in a fire would be a reward. (Our Choice).

If you choose God, you can go home. If not, you will join the rebels in hell, and never go home again.
1/3 sided with God, 1/3 fell from heaven. That's 2/3 total. What happened to the other 1/3? (Hint: look in the mirror.) You were indecisive then, and you're still indecisive now. Choose already!

Yes, Hell is a punishment to all those who don't accept the Lord as their Saviour and repent.
And yes, Heaven is a reward to those who do accept the Lord as their Saviour and do repent.
PS
Your works do NOT get you to Heaven.
Your faith does. And your walk with God. and your belief in Him.

To have eternal life and live with God is a reward. To go to eternal separation from God is punishment. We have a choice by choosing Jesus as our Lord and our Savior and accepting His free gift of salvation, or rejecting Him.

Heaven is God's dwelling place. Everlasting life on Earth is the reward. Psalms 37:11,29. Hell does not exist! If you are not resurrected, that means you have been eternally forgotten.

Thats what most people believe...
I think that the vatican's offical stance now is that they are states of being, if your good you are a heck of a lot closer to God than if your bad...So if you consider nearness to God a good thing, you are correct.
Of course, a good christian realizes that one need not be dead to enjoy the rewards of a virtuos life.

That's why there is Purgatory
Purgatory is not Hell minus a few torments and degrees Fahrenheit; it's not Heaven minus joy. It's not a "Third Final Destination" of souls. Purgatory is simply the place where already saved souls are cleansed of the temporal effects of sin before they are allowed to see the holy face of Almighty God.
Revelation 21:27 tells us that "...nothing unclean will enter [Heaven]."

The Bible tells us we must be born again to live eternally with Jesus Christ. God is love but he gives us free will.So we either choose right choices or wrong choices. The Bible tells us if we deny Jesus we will go to hell for the rest of eternity. There we will burn in the lake of fire or we have the choice to follow Jesus and go to heaven. Heaven is so beautiful you can't even imagine it all. The Bible tells of streets of gold and gates with pearl handles. But in order to believe in any of this you have to have faith because faith does not work without believing. Pray and ask God to show you the truth and to reveal Himself to you so you will get your answer.

We were privileged with the opportunity to visit hell with impunity but instead of smelling brimstone (sulfur) all I could smell was butane . I guess they've modernized .
Heaven is hydrogen powered . No smell..!
