my sister in law recently took the citizen test and that was one of the questions. she answered 52, and they asked why and she answered including alaka and hawaii. and they told her she was correct, but no mater how many times i count the stars on the flag i count 50, and also counted the states on the map and also 50. so im stumpted.

It is 50 and the two of the 50 states not considered 'continental US' are Alaska and Hawaii, and the person giving the test must have just heard that part and gave credit to be nice. Or maybe 1/2 an answer is considered ok.

The white stars on an American flag symbolize the individual states.
There is one star for each state in the union. There are currently 50, for the fifty states in the union.
Whenever a new state joins, a new star is added to the flag on the following 4th of July. The last time that happened was om July 4, 1960; Hawaii having become a state in the latter part of 1959.
There are 13 stripes for the 13 original colonies.
The white on the flag signifies purity and innocence. The red, for hardiness and courage, and the blue for perseverance and determination. When you weave them together, you get the American Flag, symbol for equality and freedom

hello have you ever heard of the lower 48? thats the number of states located on the north american continent, add in alaska and hawaii it makes 50. that chick was dumb. probably got confused because there are 52 cards in a deck...
