Was Jesus trying to show people the concept of reincarnation?

Just for you to know, I believe in Reincarnation.

Hey guys, I said I believe in Reincarnation, so I KNOW hwat reincarnation is. However, I think Jesus was trying to "show" how possible it is to "return" after death. If Jesus had made Lazarus come back in another person, Jesus would have NO PROOF of what he was trying to show.

Of course I know the difference...

iqfrenzy4, you are right. Jesus was trying to explain the concept of reincarnation that actually nobody understood, due to the lack of knowledge and enlightenment.

A very good point, Janet.

Baptism is symbolic of reincarnation, I think, even moreso than the revival of the dead.

John the Baptist, who was Jesus's first cousin and ardent follower, was an Essene Jew. And everyone who knows history knows Essenes taught reincarnation and karma. Baptism symbolizes dying, being buried, and rising again in a new (physical) birth, as represented by being born "of water".

In baptism, Jesus conveyed the message, "This is symbolic of what happens to you (you die and are reborn)," but his message was misconstrued as "Do this (get dunked in water for no particular reason other than I said so)."

that's not reincarnation. What Jesus did grow to be He resurrected Lazarus. Lazarus' spirit grow to be back to his very own lifeless physique. Reincarnation is while, when you die, you're reborn as yet another person or animal; a cow, working example. If Lazarus had come back as a turtle, which could have been reincarnation. In Christian theology there is no such element as reincarnation.

I have mixed feelings about reincarnation. I really see no reason why it isn't possible. I don't see Lazarus as being reincarnated. Reincarnation to me means a soul returning to physical life in a new body. Lazarus returned from death in his same body.

NO! Jesus was showing that he held the power of life over death, and that is resurrection, not reincarnation. There is a BIG difference.

Lazarus came back as himself. If he was reincarnated, he might have been a cow, apple, ant, or whatever.

If reincarnation was real, then Jesus would not have had to die, because we could all just keep coming back again and again until we get it right.

But because we CAN'T do that, Jesus had to make it right for us. We have one life on this earth, and then we die. Our souls do not come back here as something else or as another person.

You're free to believe in reincarnation, but be very assured that Jesus did NOT believe in it.

Lazarus was resurrected not reincarnated. The definitions are not the same. Jesus was trying to show them a greater love and power than what that they had ever seen before. He was showing them that in Him is all life. Jesus said in that same chapter, "I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die". In other words He was saying If you believe in Jesus (accept Him as Your Saviour) Though you die physically, yet you will be ressurrected bodily to live eternally to NEVER die again. Jesus said that he was the Resurrection not the reincarnation.

Very interesting theory, Janet; I've never thought of it that way. Jesus said and did quite a few things that could refer to reincarnation. I'm a Christian, but also believe in reincarnation.

To all those who are saying you don't come back in your original body, I think Janet is referring to Jesus conveying that idea...not performing an actual reincarnation.

Am I right, Janet?

Reincarnation is not resurrection. Lazarus was just brought back to live. Jesus is the giver of life!

Reincarnation is all about coming back as another person....re-cycling the soul. With Lazarus, Jesus called him back to life....as the same person he was before.

No Janet, Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead for several reasons.

1. Jesus loved Lazarus. Lazarus and his 2 sisters Mary and Martha were close friends of the Lord Jesus. Jesus wept at the graveside showing his love for Lazarus. He raised Lazarus because he loved him.

2. Jesus raised Lazarus as a sign to the others present to show his power as the one and only Son of God.

3. Jesus raised Lazarus as a witness so others might believe in him by pointing to his own soon to come resuurection.

Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again. Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day. Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?
She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.

Believeth thou this Janet?
