It doesn't matter since most of them are almost immediately converted to believe that if they stop believing, they'll burn in hell for all eternity. That's a little much pressure to put in the psyche of a child, in my opinion.

You're born without the knowledge of a God because there isn't one. The concept of any deity is passed on to you through tradition and influence from your parents wanting you to be a part of the same religion. If there really was a God you'd think he'd say something to you when you were born, in which case all the children born with deformities and ailments would say, "Hey God, wtf?"
And before anyone tells me I'm crude or ignorant, I was born into a Roman Catholic family, went to Catholic school, was an altar server, am currently agnostic, and had my older sister die of a heart defect at 2 days old.

I am an atheist and I do not agree with the statement. However, before some twist this into a 'I told you so', I will tell you why.
All are born with very little knowledge. We know they have learn some things prior to birth, but in essence we are all born 'Tabloraza' and therefore learn to be the religion or non-religion of the environment about us. This is why you do not suddenly get a Christian child in a Hindu family. It is also why religions are so eager to brainwash from an early age.
Most atheists have developed out of their religion because they see through the superstitious nonsense that they are.

I know you're asking Christians, but I'd like to answer if I may. I think it's because everyone is born ignorant. This does NOT imply that atheists are ignorant. It simply means no one can be born with knowledge of anything; knowledge of god, knowledge of sex, knowledge of math.
When we're born, we're pretty much a blank disc waiting to be filled with knowledge. We're born a-everything.
The fact that the concept of gods exists implies that it is possible for a person to be born in the wilderness and still come to the conclusion that gods exist, when he tries to understand things he is incapable of learning on his own.

Pagan here:
I just had to state what a wonderfully dialectic question you have asked.
A baby has to be taught to Hate and it has to be taught to Worship. I wonder if that is normal Christian seqencing.
After reading the answers, I just have to add that when an "a" is added to a word the meaning is changed. Sexual becomes asexual which means, lacking interest in or desire for sex. When Theist becomes Atheist it becomes, Lacking interest in or desire for gods.

Atheism is the lack of beliefs in any god/s.
All newborn babies do not believe in god/s (or anything else). If they did, they would pray instead of wail for food, blanket or for a change of diaper.

I think its stupid. A baby doesn't come out of its mother and say, "There is no God!". We are ignorant of it when we are born. We are ignorant at birth. To say we are atheists also I think is an insult to atheism. Atheism is set on the same branch as Ignorance, if, that is, we are all atheists at birth.

I think it implies a lot of things that favor atheistic arguments. ;)
However, it has no bearing on:
1. the divine nature of human beings
2. our relationship with God
3. the significance and importance of LEARNING a Godly way of life
But it'll make for a good discussion. God still loves ya. :)

It never really did much for me. It could mean we are all simply born without any kind of knowledge... or it takes a while to find a need to believe in imaginary friends?!

Obviously, everyone is born believing in a god of some kind, as chosen by the supreme council of deities via lottery at birth. It's only later on that people force themselves to stop believing in that which they were born believing.
