I can't eat raw apples, carrots, or cherries - makes my throat really itchy and swells up. I can eat them if they are cooked or processed, but fresh causes a reaction. Sometimes raw celery and broccoli will bother me too, but not as much..

It seems to be sort of common, I know of a few other people who have this too... what is it? Is there a name for it?? Can anything be done to get rid of it??

Thanks, but I'm really looking for a more specific answer... right now I'm looking at it being a Rosaceae allergy, possibly also a birch allergy, which would make sense, since I do have hayfever in the spring too...

It is called oral allergy syndrome. I used to have it also. I was allergic to nearly all raw fruits and vegetables. Just getting the juice on my skin made me break out in rash. I don't have it anymore. After being on allergy desensitation shots for five years for my pollen allergies, my allergy to raw fruits and vegetables went away! Now I can even eat salad and watermelon.

I'm not sure what this substance is or what this allergy is called, but here must be some type of substance or chemical that is destroyed once you cook the food, because heat can destroy lots of things. This substance may be part of the fruit or something that may have been put on it by someone else for whatever reason.

The only way that can be done is to strictly avoid the food that can cause the allergic reactions or symptoms. Don’t forget to read the ingredients of food you’ll consume. If there isn’t any, ask the store staff to explain the ingredients.

it’s of course better for you to consult with your doctor before taking any medications, especially if your food allergy has become worse.

It is called a food allergy and you need to see your allergist and get his recommendations on what to do. Call your allergist and get in to see him/her and get this checked out.
