Solvang is about 30 minutes north of Santa Barbara off of Hwy 154 (Chumash Highway) which is a nice but sometimes winding road through San Marcos Pass. It goes right by Cachuma Lake which a dammed lake that is the water supply for Santa Barbara. There's camping and fishing there, too.
Turn left on Hwy 246 and go past (or stop at) Santa Ynez and the Chumash Casino. Across from the Casino is the Maverick Saloon, local hangout and toe tappin' Cowboy music place.
Solvang is further up the road and it's a real tourist trap but a fun place to be and shop... especially at Christmas time. Eat some Apple skivers and if you go during the Summer, there's a great open air theatre there.
Get back down the pass and party in SB on lower State Street.
Have fun.

Hi,
Solvang is beautiful. It is a replica of a Scandanavian town.
There are great restaurants and lots of fun shop with things from all over Scandanavia.
There is not much night life. It's not a town to go clubbing, if you know what I mean. It's quiet, peaceful, and relaxing.
Now, Santa Barbara on the otherhand is a great place for night life. It is only 30 minutes away. But don't plan on partying in SB and driving back. Either you'll be dead, because the roads are very winding, or you'll be in jail because there are lots of cops.
A good idea is to visit Solvang in the day and sleep in SB and have lots of night life.
I hope that helps.
Mike

Solvang is a good place to spend the afternoon. Walk around immerse yourself in the 'culture' but not really a spend the night place. You can get great souvenirs from there, clogs, especially, and eat great Scandinavian food, but that's about it. Go down to SB to party. Spend your night there not in solvang.

They have some lovely inns in Solvang, and great restaurants. I would spend the night there, myself. Then you can take advantage of the wonderful breakfasts in the morning! It's a beautiful town.

Salvang is a cool little town. You can make a day trip of it. If you take the 101, you'll have a nice drive. It can get warm there, but it's nice in the afternoons. If you like to gamble, the Chumash Casino is there to.
