My 41 year old uncle has autism and is trying to live on his own after my grandma was moved to a nursing home. My family feels that his living on his own is crucial for his self esteem. Does anyone know if the state of Minnesota offers any financial help if we should need it down the road?

There should be a SHIP Office (State Health Insurance Program) in your area, there's one in every state. They have agents who get directly involved in a case and make sure the individual gets exactly what they need as far as area services, $$ help, whatever.

Call your local Soc. Sec. office or go online to ssa.gov and search for SHIP for your state.

Here's the link you need:

http://search.ssa.gov/search?q=ship+in+Minnesota&btnG=GO&output=xml_no_dtd&sort=date%3AD%3AL%3Ad1&ie=UTF-8&client=default_frontend&oe=UTF-8&proxystylesheet=default_frontend&proxyreload=1

He should already be getting services from State Medicaid, and or Soc Sec SSI payments. Call your local office and they should be able to direct you to a SHIP agent.

Good Luck.

Not sure if the state offers assistence. If not I'm sure your uncle is elligable sore Social Security Dissability. If he is severely autistic then perhaps someone in your family should step in and make them self , I'm not sure the legal term, his gaurdian. Someone who makes the decision for him. But if he is able to make decisions on his own without trouble and there is a good possiblity that he can live on his own then let him. Just make sure all the relatives chip in and that someone looks in on him every day or two. If he gets SSD then that might be enough money for him to afford his own place.

I suspect that they just don't want to be burdened with him: see autism, and self esteem, at http://www.ezy-build.net.nz/~shaneris on pages 12, and 38; perhaps the dietary changes, and/or supplements may help him with his autism, and contact social services, and the respective state and national Autism organisations. He will certainly need training, if he is to cope: try to visit when you can, and keep in regular contact, without being too intrusive.

is he on social security income? if not, see if you can get him some help... the State can probably help with food benefits and medical, if he's not on that program.

it's great he is trying to live independently.. i'm sure he's proud of himself.

you could also see about getting him a social worker -- they can provide a lot of helpful services for your uncle.. give social services a call, and you will get a lot of good info.

all the best.
