Did I not tell you earlier that a Jew is such a noble, precious jewel that God and all the angels dance when he farts?---Martin Luther (Germany)

“What then shall we Christians do with this damned, rejected race of Jews?
First, their synagogues should be set on fire, and whatever does not burn up should be covered or spread over with dirt so that no one may ever be able to see a cinder or stone of it. And this ought to be done for the honour of God and of Christianity, in order that God may see that we are true Christians.
Secondly, their homes should be likewise broken down and destroyed.
Thirdly, they should be deprived of their prayerbooks and talmuds in which such idolatry, lies, cursing and blasphemy are taught.
Fourthly, their rabbis must be forbidden under threats of death to teach anymore.” – Martin Luther

“If I find a Jew to baptize, I shall lead him to the Elbe bridge, hang a stone around his neck, and push him into the water, baptizing him with the name of Avraham!.. I cannot convert the Jews. Our lord Christ did not succeed in doing so; but I can close their mouths so that there will be nothing for them to do but to lie upon the ground.” – Martin Luther

Jesus did not call them Abraham's children, but a "brood of vipers" [Matt. 3:7]. Oh, that was too insulting for the noble blood and race of Israel, and they declared, "He has a demon' [Matt 11:18]. Our Lord also calls them a "brood of vipers"; furthermore in John 8 [:39,44] he states: "If you were Abraham's children ye would do what Abraham did.... You are of your father the devil. It was intolerable to them to hear that they were not Abraham's but the devil's children, nor can they bear to hear this today.------Martin Luther

They [rulers] must act like a good physician who, when gangrene has set in proceeds without mercy to cut, saw, and burn flesh, veins, bone, and marrow. Such a procedure must also be followed in this instance. Burn down their synagogues, forbid all that I enumerated earlier, force them to work, and deal harshly with them, as Moses did...
If this does not help we must drive them out like mad dogs.----Martin Luther

Martin Luther: [ in his last sermon, four days before he died, ] called for practical measures: burn their synagogues, confiscate all books in Hebrew, prohibit Jewish prayers, force them to do manual labour, and drive them out of Germany.

“I do insist on the certainty that sooner or later – once we hold power – Christianity will be overcome and the German Church established. Yes, the German church, without a Pope, and Luther, if he could be with us, would give us his blessing.” (Adolf Hitler, Hitler’s speeches, edited by Prof. N.H. Baynes [oxford, 1942], pg. 369.)

Sadly yes Luther was anti semitic. This was part of the Roman Catholic Church doctrine that he retained as his doctrine. It is hard to see how one so right about justification by faith, the corrupt selling of indulgences, and the gross misuse of power by the Popes could make such a tragic mistake about God's chosen people. Just goes to show you nobody is perfect. Luther's good points far outweighed his bad. But no doubt in my mind this was a serious mistake. God will yet redeem his people Israel .... Romans 11:26 And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob: ....... Come to Christ

Yep, he was, and a whole lotta bunches of Jews were murdered because of him. It wasn't uncommon on Easter and Christmas across Europe, that after services the churchgoers would run out and round up nearby Jews and murder them, sometimes lock them in their synagogues (as Martin Luther recommended in his work "The Jews and Their Lies") and then burn it to the ground with the Jews inside, including women and children. Blood libel charges were apt to be instigated around this time too. Many Jewish deaths because of Martin Luther, yep.

I was raised Lutheran (i'm a queer liberal one) and I knew Luther was an anti-Semite. We talked about his mistakes as well as the theology we incorporate into our church. He's not perfect, that's for sure. But throughout the stories in the Bible God always chooses the imperfect people for zir will.

Whether you believe in God or not, or if the bible is literal or not, the point is even screw-ups can do good things in the world.

I didn't "know" that he was........but you are quoting HItler's speech not Martin Luther. maybe he went through a stage where he was just appalled about Jesus's death and didnt' understand and maybe he wrote down things that were never meant to be published or read by others in his quest for truth.
Is that possible?

Martin Luther
Theologian
Without quite intending to, Martin Luther changed the course of Christianity and Western history. His 1517 complaint against specific abuses in the Roman Catholic church -- a document now known as the 95 Theses -- sparked the explosive Protestant Reformation that swept Europe for the rest of the century. Born to a Roman Catholic family (his father was a copper miner), Luther graduated from the University of Erfurt in 1505 but abandoned his legal studies to enter a monastery devoted to St. Augustine. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1507 and by 1512 was a doctor of theology and a Bible professor at the University of Wittenberg. Luther was a gifted preacher but his theology began to clash with that of the Catholic church: he wrote that salvation came not by any human work but by absolute faith in God's promise of forgiveness on account of Jesus Christ. Luther didn't anticipate the uproar touched off by the 95 Theses he sent to a bishop and archbishop to protest "indulgences" being sold by the Catholic hierarchy. His controversial beliefs earned him excommunication from the church, but he pressed on with many new followers. Luther produced the first reader-friendly German translation of the Bible and developed a new form of Christian worship that emphasized preaching and popular hymns, permitted the clergy to marry, and honored ordinary life in the world as a field for God's service.
Extra credit: Extra credit: In 1525, Luther married a former nun, Katharina (Katherine) von Bora, sixteen years younger than he. They had six children . . . Luther's hymn, "A Mighty Fortress is our God" (circa 1529), has been translated into more than 50 languages . . . It is likely that Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the door of the castle church in Wittenberg, but historians disagree on that story's accuracy... Yes, the Lutheran church is named for Luther.

Well; is that all you can come up with in the realm of early Christianity ? The early Christian church was rife with dissension, misunderstanding, bigotry, and bad theology ... that's why the Apostles wrote the Epistles you read in the bible to the churches in Asia minor and abroad.

the two blunders of Luther, it fairly is seen, comprise interior them 2 seeds of actuality; salvation is definitely the paintings of God, and not the paintings of guy, and Scripture is definitely the very word of God, which could be accorded the utmost authority; yet Luther is going incorrect whilst he's taking those very actual concepts and elevates them to the factor that they exclude the different truths in contact. If salvation is God's paintings, it is likewise actual that component of God's paintings is drawing guy as much as the status of sonship, so as that guy now will become privileged to share interior the paintings of God - a co-worker with God, as St. Paul placed it; if Scripture could receive the utmost authority, the subsequent maximum authority interior the hierarchy isn't the guy believer, however the "God-breathed" Magisterium of the Church (cf. Jn. 20:21-23). There could nicely be no removing this Divinely appointed "center guy," and substituting the authority of the guy for the authority of the Church. In sum, we are in a position to take those 2 foundational pillars of the Reformation, and exhibit how they comprise mandatory truths of their essence; yet we should additionally coach how they unnecessarily truncate the reality, and to that end substitute into enemies of the very concepts they choose to sell. The Protestant truths listed decrease than are hampered because of the fact they are left incomplete; sola scriptura desires to be understood as prima scriptura, so as that the reality relating to the Church could nicely be admitted into the communicate; sola fide desires to be understood as sola gratia, so as that the reality approximately Divine sonship could nicely be allowed to flourish.
