Your fine. At least you helped some. You don't know who you can trust anymore. You didn't need to talk to them. I don't think you did anything wrong.

Once again, the homeless...
Homeless children? I've helped many, but never threw money at them. Please don't do that again. As said in a previous answer, children ask when they are hungry or need money. If you throw it to the ground, they will run to get it, might get hurt in the process. Please don't think that the homeless are some disease ridden downtrodden that can be ran away from. They won't disappear as long as there's no way to help each individual, and they each have their own problems. Running away isn't a way to help. Next time, throw the money into a collection plate or into the bank and write a check to the boys town or YMCA.
As far as a sin or blessing? I believe if you learned a lesson from these answers, its a blessing. You didn't hurt anyone but yourself here, (that's why you're looking for answers) so I don't think sin was involved.

Have you considered the risk of a child being hit by a car trying to get your change off the street. That is why they don't have Santa throw candy to kids in parades anymore.
Additionally, if the kids weren't asking for money, how do you know they were homeless? Maybe it was an insult.
Finally, it is usually better to support organized groups who provide for the homeless, who pool the money to provide beds and hot food, rather than a few coins which can usually provide nothing.

I think it is completely sinless to have thrown the money at them; that is irrelevant. The point is you helped them. If anything is a sin it is just walking or driving by these kids and not helping them at all.

Would have been nicer to hand it to them. If some of the money ended up in the street, the children could have been injured or killed trying to get it out of the street

It was an insult, and mean of you to do. It was wise to floor it though - a well thrown quarter can crack a window.

Well it was kind of rude, but I don't think it was a sin.
