ok, I REALLY like this Japanese exchange girl at my school. I was one of the first people to talk to her when she came here, and I'm one of the only people that talks to her. She doesnt speak much english. i talk to her, but im always the one talking and whenever anyone talks to her, she rarely says anything but yes or no. i know she likes hello kitty and playing cards and the band BUMP OF CHICKEN (Japanese rock), but thats all i know. she never really seems interested in anyone, but I want to be able to talk to her and finally break the ice a little more!
HELP

As long as she doesn't seem uncomfortable with you, keep doing what you're doing. It's hard to think in another language - you're helping her a lot just by talking and giving her phrases and forms of speech she can use. Smiles don't need translation, too. As you're no doubt aware, it's hard enough changing schools - now what if you're going to one where everybody is really weird and you don't understand a lot of what goes on? Be patient and just hang out and chat as you want - don't worry too much about finding things she likes; that will come as she gets more comfortable and familiar with you and your school.
