Music Engineering Education?

I am a second year Computer Engineering Technology student and I am think about getting work in a recording studio, what you you recommend as far as education goes? The only recoding engineering program in my city is a specialization in a music diploma. I do not necessarily want to got school for 2 years to learn music engineering. I was think about learning more about the equipment and approach the positions as some who knows a bit about the equipment and can do basic troubleshooting.

First, check out all you can on the subject ahead of time, not to be an expert, but only to learn the basics. Include the internet, magazines on recording and books on the process.

Next, considering buying a small recording setup and software that you could use with your laptop. Look around for bands and musicians and tell them that you are a recording amateur and how would they like to be recorded. If you are on a good sized campus, I'm sure you can find both bands and soloists. And most musicians love to have their stuff recorded. This will give you some practice and a chance to apply some of the stuff that you have read. Make a deal with each performer that you can use their music, but only to demonstrate your recording talent. You might even be able to make a few bucks producing CD copies for the band for local sale.

At this point I think you could put together a resume with sample music and start bugging the crap out of every local studio that you could find. Be helpful, enthusiastic, and start for cheap.

This is the good, old fashioned, boot strap approach.

Another alternative might be a through-the-internet vocational, recording "engineer" degree.
