I'd love to know the answer to this, I've been asking heaps of people lately but everyone I speak to tells me something different.
Here are the facts I have been told and you can make up your own mind.
RUNNING for 30 minutes will raise your heart rate and increase your metabolism for 24 hours after you finish.
WALKING will raise it for about 15 min after you finish.
WALKING keeps you body in the fat burning zone the whole time
RUNNING also builds and develops muscles- muscle burns fat faster than fat burns fat...

OK Jess. take this from a guy who has been running for years. Running is the best calorie burner out there because it uses all your muscles and is more strenuous then walking, BUT other good alternatives to running are biking and swimming which are just as good as running. All those people out there who say walking is better are lazy and really have no idea what they are talking about. I could talk about running vs. walking all day but I'm sure you don't want to read all that. It seams like Cassie b is the only one on the right track, just try doing research on it like her and the facts will paint out a more detailed pictured on the pro's and con's running, walking, biking and swimming.

You burn more calories walking at a brisk pace than you do running, you need to walk fast enough so that you get up a bit of a sweat, that your heart is beating faster and you should be able to carry on a conversation - not as if you were sitting down having coffee, but if you can't talk cause its too hard than you are pushing yourself too far.
Walking or riding a bike are both good forms of exercise that will help you burn calories, the benefit of bike riding is that it doesn't have the impact that walking does, but riding down hill won't do much for you so it needs to be on the flat with a little bit of hill.
What ever form of exercise you use, remember that when it gets easier for you to do the same thing, push yourself harder by walking faster, or longer or on a different path which gets progressively more difficult.

Running is better it will elevate your heart and burn more fat. There is an acual calcualtor somewhere I try to find it.

A 57Kg person who walks briskly for 1 hour on a hard surface will burn 236 Calaries.

A 57 kg person who runs about 12 minutes per mile will burn 236 calories.

So I would say burning fat is the about the same, but your heart will like the running.

From what I know, as long as you walk/run the same distance, walking and running burns the same amount of calories. The only difference is that when you run, you tone your muscles. If you want to just burn calories, walking is fine.

You want to concentrate on how many body parts youre working on. When you walk you can concentrate on your stomach, arms and legs, so you burn more calories. You should do intervals, run for 5 to bring your heart rate up, then speed walk for 2 to let your heart rate go down, and keep repeating it until you reach your goal!!
