Internet Explorer uses tabs too so that is not a good comparison. How pages are displayed and load faster using Mozilla, along with the multitudes of plugins to customize the browser are huge factors to consider. Plus the fact that there are fewer vulnerabilities with Mozilla than there are with IE make Mozilla my browser of choice.
IE is just used either for sites that are not designed well and only load properly in IE, or simply to see how the other 78% (approximate) of Internet users see web pages.

Oh, the browser wars have made it into answers too, huh?
I'm a programmer, so I don't have a choice. With around 58-65% using IE, with versions varying from 4 to 7, I have to target all. Except for IE 5.5 that is. Sheesh what a mess that one was. I tried for a while, but I finally said forget it. Upgrade or move back to 4.0. In fact, after about another year, I'll probably cut my support to only IE 6 and above. It's time to upgrade people! As for whether Mozilla/FireFox and Opera being better. I can't say. I make sure it works in them, but as far as my surfing needs, I prefer IE.
Just so you know, IE is just as customizable, if you know what you are doing. You can configure plugins, you can add and remove them. You can customize your own browsing preferences, set up tabs, have multiple windows. Zoom in for those hidden items that so many flash games seem to be adding lately. Or zoom in on media players that apparently forgot that some of us like to view them full screen.
As for the vulnerabilities, don't be fooled! There are just as many weaknesses in most browsers. The reason you hear about IE more often is because of it's more prominant use. It is targeted more often because of this popularity. People use to say the same about Linux, but look at what happened once people started to put more and more linux boxes up. Now there are all kinds of worms and viruses tageting those platforms as well.
Now don't get me wrong, I think that the openess of the source code, and many more developers working on the system leads to quicker responses, as well as better accountability, but having a centralized control system can compete as well. It just depends on the management, goals, and talent. Microsoft has many focuses, which may be one of the main causes for it's longer time to release fixes, but I have had my experience fixing problems, and they do seem to take heart. At least the people I've talked to.
To make this long answer longer, keep using what you want to. What is good for you, may or may not be good for another. As long as you are happy. That is what is important.

I use Safari, but I think the newest version of IE has the tabs feature. Check your computer for network updates.
