"In her heyday, Columbia represented everything good and just and kind about America. She was, in her own way, an avatar of The White Goddess ... the Moon Mother, an embodiment of poetry, transformation, and dreams for a wiser tomorrow. In America's mythic history, Uncle Sam only comes around when our young country is mouthing off and spoiling for a fight. Before that, when our military ambitions were dedicated only to defending the fragile dream of democracy, the spirit of the land was seen as a woman, this woman, Columbia, the Goddess of Democracy."

Hmmmmmm, I think that things might have been better if a Goddess of Liberty had been on our money rather than "In God We Trust" - and it's obvious from the Treasury Department website that at one time Lady Liberty was being considered:

"What I propose is that *instead of the goddess of liberty* we shall have next inside the 13 stars a ring inscribed with the words PERPETUAL UNION; within the ring the allseeing eye, crowned with a halo; beneath this eye the American flag, bearing in its field stars equal to the number of the States united; in the folds of the bars the words GOD, LIBERTY, LAW."

- From a letter dated November 13, 1861 to Secretary Chase by Rev. M. R. Watkinson, Minister of the Gospel from Ridleyville, Pennsylvania,

At least that way, the history-ignorant fundies would not keep using the "In God We Trust" thing as some sort of "proof" that America is a "Christian Nation" (which it is not and never was).

(Love the quote you posted. Too bad there's such vast ignorance about the uses of symbols here)

Very interesting, though my impression is that Uncle Sam represents the Military and its strengths, and Columbia represents the home nation and its ideals.

we are seeing a flow faraway from Christianity because no one favor to be responsible for any deviant habit that they love to do. There quite is any such element as an absolute top and an absolute incorrect thanks to act. homicide is continuously going to be incorrect as an celebration. Christianity defines the guidelines better than any liberal needs the guidelines to be defined. The GOP is in a proper position to retake united states of america of america after the rustic quite sees the outcome of far left wing regulations. even as they see how those regulations play out they received't like what's it going to value them. What the GOP needs is a real Conservative to hunt workplace. no longer a liberal Republican Candidate.

I'm not sure if the lack of appreciation for symbolism (in the answers above) is a symptom, or a cause.
