Many people say that their religious beliefs and values are a private thing, and I can accept and respect that. But if they bring those beliefs and values to a public forum like this one, they should be prepared to defend those beliefs with things that other people can understand, such as consistent logic and verifiable evidence. Political correctness must cast aside if discussions and debates are going to mean anything and affect any kind of change. Wouldn't yahoo answers be incredibly boring if all we did was pat people on the back?

It is true that PC is bull, I mean there are many people who will say one thing but thinking a totally different one just because they "have to". PC is another word for hypocrisy, at least it seems so to me. I really dislike some religious systems and even more when they get in the way of the State and get all mixed up but, and here's the dangerous term, if we can't respect that then we`d live in chaos. There must be some extent of tolerance at least for us to coexist peacefully. I don't think I'm right but I do feel some are wrong because they show hate and many times they don't respect others.
I don't know, it's hard to say, it's a complicated issue that cannot be dealt with in a few lines.
BTW I'm not an atheist but I'm not a Christian tough I like many of them.

Showing respect to another human being is respecting their beliefs. You do not have a monopoly on the truth and you do not know what the truth is. you are therefore not in a position to deide others beliefs. When we get to the end of this ride no doubt we will find out what it is all about - until then, the only truth is that none of us know.

There are over 6 billion human beings on our planet. to anticipate that there is in basic terms one you've a useful relationship with is somewhat naive. once you're fortunate, you nonetheless locate the guy alluring after the honeymoon era, and something is artwork to maintain that going. A "soul mate" is a appropriate concept, yet i do no longer think of that is in any respect lifelike.

I'm not sure what your definition of outrageous is, but let me take a stab at this.
Outrageous beliefs could be the Amish (Mennonites) who by all modern standards could be considered outrageous due to their clothing, appearance, and denial of most modern technology. In reality they are productive people, don't exploit government programs (welfare, etc.) or spew hatred toward non-Amish. I'm sure respecting of their beliefs is in keeping with being a decent human and not considered PC as the respect is a two way street. I've never heard of someone Amish blowing himself up in the name of his beliefs.
Hinduism could be viewed as outrageous. They worship a deity (sacred being) with an elephant's head (Ganesha) and another depicted as being blue with 4 arms (Vishnu). They believe in "Transmigration of the Soul" which in simplistic terms means that depending on how you lived your life, when you die you will come back as a higher or lower being. Even as an animal. That could be looked at as outrageous. I have never met a Hindu that treated me with any less respect than I gave him. That was not PC in my opinion.
What do I think PC is? I think is PC is not calling something what it really is in fear retribution. When that two way street of respect is not there and one allows himself to be pushed around out of fear for standing up to what is wrong, that is PC. When my constitutional rights are used against me I turn a blind eye to a problem in the name of "civil liberties" that is PC. When one's world view is through "rose colored glasses" and you are so naive as to not see something or a group for what they are doing and you fail to act, that is PC. When you are afraid to say or do what is right or just for fear of being labeled a racist or a hate-monger or anti-this or pro-that that is PC.
Basically being PC is being a coward.

I think that what an individual chooses to believe does not concern me, and while I may disagree, there is no way one can know for certain one way or another. Therefore, one shouldn't try to deprive others of beliefs which grant them the courage to live their lives. This goes for atheism, Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, whatever.

Political correctness is mandated respect. It is enforced when people don't have the human capacity to tolerate another persons point of view. Respect is a personal choice - followed by action. You either choose to give it, or you don't.

The problem is who decides what is outrageous? I do believe political correctness has gone way overboard. We all need to try and be respectful, because what I think is outrageous might be very important to you!

I show respect for people, but I always tell religious people that I think religious thinking is a poison and that they are settling for less than they should when they ensnare themselves in it

I think you hit the nail on the head. You can challenge ideas without demeaning the people who have them.
It is a shame when people react to a challenge to their ideas as an attack.
