Thank you to all who took time to answer.I don't think I'll get a PO.I've contacted people who help women get out of situations like this safely.I feel getting a PO will increase his anger.

Protective orders are a piece of paper, period. If someone is caught violating one, yes, he can spend some time getting acquainted with the latest crop of drunks in the local lockup.
However the key word is getting caught. The law does not have the manpower to be at your side or doorstep 24/7 and when the call for help comes in, sad to say the finest police dept in God's world measures response time in minutes. You may have seconds.Repeat MAY. By all means get one if you feel you need one, and PLEASE call the law when it is violated. If nothing else it helps to have something to show the judge. But take a small lesson from some old westerns. Call the Calvary, then barricade and do whatever you have to do, up to and including deadly force if you have no other choice while you wait for the bugle calls.

Judging from the information you have given, it is your word against his that a threat was actually made. A protective order will not stop him from finding you, and the police cannot watch you 24 hours a day. Depending on what state your in, it may be difficult to remove the children, if they are his, without giving him a location of the children. I would say you would be hard pressed to get a protective order on the threat alone, i really varies by state. and with no proof that he actually made the threat, the judge may feel there is not enough evidence to issue one. I would make a police report just the same, explain to the officer what threat was made. It is true that most counties allow for an emergency concealed carry permit, which may be an option if you fear for your safety. You could also ask the police or local sherrif to drive by your place more often to check on you.In any case, it appears what you really need is a good lawyer, and a court order. Best of luck

Security specialists have found that protective orders can actually provoke a person to violence -- in any case, as the people above me have mentioned, the police can't be there 24 hours a day and in the end, it's just a piece of paper. But you should let the police know what's going on and ask them to keep an eye on you.
I would also recommend calling the Domestic Violence Hotline:
1-800-799-SAFE (7233) (Available 24 Hours a Day)
They'll help get you and your kids out of that situation. Good luck - you'll be in my prayers!

Yes and no. If a protective order is needed, the person is likely to ignore it. However, having an order allows the person protected to have the violator removed by law enforcement simply for coming near them. Without the order, police would have to wait for a violent act to do anything. At that point, it is most likely too late. Some state allow an emergency application for a concealed weapons permit to the victim when a protective order is issued. That allows for self defense.

its not hard to get one at all. But its is what the man does with it. It may make him back off or it could make him angry! The law can not be with you every minute of the day if he breaks the order and you are able to phone the police the worst he may get is 10 days in jail and that may be just enough to make him mad if he loses his job in that time. My advice is to never leave home alone. A close friend of mine her EX husband is in jail for burning his girlfriend in the OVEN he he had already been warned twice! and all he got for puting her in the oven wedging the door shut and turning it on and leaving her to burn to death BUT she did not die she was found ! all he got was 18 months in jail!! Be safe always check doors windows, If coming home at dark time sit in locked car until eyes adjust to the darkness and check everything out before you exit the car. Take a saftey class and be aware of evrything around you everyday take a different way home making stops you would not never make taking time to smell the roses and your stalker will find it hard to know your everyday routine.Best of LUCK

They are not a magic wall against your attacker. You can still be killed or hurt.
They simply gives the police the ability to arrest him on sight if he violates it. Without, they can do nothing to him, for being outside of your house or work place, or calling you on the phone.
If you bring enough evidence or have enough of a compelling story a judge can grant you a PO on someone that has never had any history.

No they do not! The police can't protect you 24 hours of every single day.
It's not hard to get a restraining order, but you can't make them obey it, if they are stubborn.
I would move across the country, leave no forwarding address or be ready for a fight!

It might be smart to get one but in the long run a piece of paper isn't going to save someone. It may put them in jail for 24 or 48hrs but then they are back out. What then? Get a very large dog!!
Their are usually local Family Crisis Shelters where you can stay and hide!!!
