When I was a security alarm technician, I used to prefer an analog meter to check the continuity/resistance of alarm circuits.

The reason was that, when using an analog meter, you can actually see a "rhythm" or "bounce" as switch and relay contacts open and close as you test the system. After a while, you get to where you can detect a defective switch or relay just by observing a hesitation in the rhythm of the meter needle as the contacts open and close.

This is hard to describe, but it was a good method of detecting switches or relays that were likely to cause false alarms in a security system.

And downright filthy lies. Do you write down all the digits? Do you know the accuracy of the instrument? Turns out the display digits are cheap to add, accuracy is expensive. I have never seen a digital meter whose digits did not exceed the accuracy of the instrument as given by its own manufacturer. And we just write them all down like they were real. At least with an analog meter, you had to squint a little before you imagined that extra digit that wasn't really there.
