If you are looking for a smaller dog then a Beagle is great. They are lovable clowns that love everyone. They are great with kids. People say they are noisy but mine is the last of my four dogs to bark, or I guess that should be howl. They are hounds and bay and can be pretty noisy.
If you want a bigger dog the APBT, the “Nanny Dog”, is a great family dog that loves kids. The Pit used to be the most popular family dog in the country. Mine love everyone, they do not know what stranger means, and everyone is a friend.
When my daughter brought over my one month old grandson over for the first time she sat him on the floor in his carrier and the Pit went over to check him out. She then lay down beside him and stayed there for the next hour, did not leave his side.

It depends on how much time you have to give to a dog. A good breed of dog will doing things out of the ordinary if ignored or left alone for great lengths of time. Shepherds are great with all members of the family, but especially the kids, but you cannot be away from the house for 10 and 12 hours. The dog will have an anxiety attack.
As the other person stated, Labrador Retrievers are great, but they also need attention. They are very laid back and affectionate.

According to the temperment tests performed all breeds of dogs golden retrievers score low, I think in the 70's or low 80's, which is not good. Also a golden retriever is the breed of dog most likely to bite.
Pitbulls score 94% on that same temperment test. They are the most loving protective dog around, if raised by the right person, but with any dog it depends on how the owner treats and trains it.
Pitbulls do like a lot of attention, and some tend to think that they are lap dogs.
Good luck in your dog search!

It depends on the dog. you should ask the breeder (or rescue person) about the dog. But i recommend A Lab (excersize it please!), A golden Retreiver(SP?). I do not recommend any herding dogs (and certian other breeds) for kids (E.I. Border Collies, Australian Shepherds, cattle dogs, etc.), because they are herding animals and have that instinct, and will try to herd your kids. (I have a australian Shepherd) and if they get the excersize they require they can become destructive. (i love them though, but my aussie gets 3 miles biking every day, and she herds cows at night, plus is a showing agility dog). You should really talk to your local shelter person (or breeder) about the dogs they recommend. What you might like is go to a rescue shelter and some shelters let you have a 2 week trail. It's basically where you keep the dop for 2 weeks and it's yours, and after the 2 weeks you can then decide whether you want to purchuse hte dog or give it back. that way you can see the dog you are getting

Definitely a lab they are the most family friendly dogs. I have one and I have been babysitting my niece everyday for the last 14 months and the dog in fact is only about 9 months they have grown up together and my niece tortures that poor dog she step on it and pulls it and my poor dog doesn't do a thing to her . In fact one day my niece fell off the bed and started frantically screaming and my dog went nuts trying to get to her to make sure she was ok. I love my dog so much and she loves attention she is just a big baby is all she is. Hope this helps!

a collie. I know that they are great dogs. I had one as a kid and got one when I was older. The only problem they have is that their coat can get a little wild so you can get a smooth collie. They are great dogs. Loyal, loving , very easy to potty train and are great watch dogs. But you didn't say if you lived in a house or an apartment. They could be a little big for an apartment.

All dogs bite. It's about teaching your kids how to behave with dogs as well as training the dog. Labs and retrievers are good dogs with kids, as well as many of the sporting breeds. Talk to the breeder or shelter staff about dogs that are good with kids.

I have two Italian Greyhounds, I also baby 6 kids from infant to 12 yrs. My greyhounds are great with kids... Thought they are one family oriented once they get used to certain people being around often its nothing but loads of laughs... They have a very high energy level which is good to wear out the kids before bed. They are also lapdogs. If they can find away to get as close as possible to you they'll do it. Neither one of my dogs have ever bitten us or any of the kids no matter how much we rough house with them. I highly recommend them.... Not the best guarddogs but the best cuddelers.

SHitzus are rated the best family dog. They are very friendly and were bred for companionship in China. They dont shed or bite. My sister has 2 and they are great little guys! But I would get a mix because peurbreds often have purebred gentic diseases.
I have a mixed minipoodle/terrier and he is the best dog I've ever known.
