You have to report it right away, and keep reporting it until something is done! ALL petstores, and I mean ALL petstores!!!! get their dogs from puppy mills! Or backyard breeders, who are no better.

This person whose house you went to WAS A PUPPYMILL!!!! No real breeder breeds constantly, year round, keeps dogs in cages their whole life, and breeds 20 different breeds! They specialize in one breed, and perhaps two. There dogs are parts of the family and only have a litter once a year if not less often and only have a few litters in their whole life.

Reputable breeders do not breed for profit. They breed for conformation, good genetics, showing, and if the quality of certain dogs is of the utmost quality, then yes, they may keep them to add to their breeding stock.

No real breeder would ever sell a dog to the first guy you has the money, which is what happens in a pet store. Real breeders will ask, and check, references, speak with your vet, do a home visit, speak with you on the phone, and make you fill out a very lengthy questionnaire, and even then you are not guaranteed a dog.

All pet stores will lie and say they get their dogs from a "local breeder" They are always from puppymills. Purchasing an animal from a petstore is supporting the puppymillers and therefore causing your cute new puppy's parents to be further exploited, and horribly abused for years to come.

Most puppymill dogs never step foot on grass, never get pettted, and never get medical attention, which is why petstore pets end up being very sick, and often have behavioural problems, they are not being breed from quality stock, just random dogs.

Anyways, your city will have regulations of cage size, number of animals per cage, how many water/food bowls required etc. So, please make sure you report it, and if you can get other people to report it. You can also contact your local newspaper and inform them of what is going on. I have a friend who was in the same situation that you are, and she has recently told me that the petstore she reported was finally shut down!! After reporting it, she found out that she wasn't the only one who did, which puts more pressure on animal control to do something about it.

You have to report this. At the very least it will add to, or begin a list of complaints against that place, and eventually something will be done about it. If you need more convincing that you should report it, go and check out some websites that have pictures of dogs in puppymills, I'm sure you'll realize how horrible their lives are, and they need people like us to stick up for them.

What you have just seen is indeed a puppy mill. Please call your local animal control now! The lady only cares about making money off these poor animals, she does not care at all for the welfare of the animals. The quality of a life spent in a cage is horrible, just being breed over and over again is no good for any breed of dog or cats. The only way to help all these animals is call animal control where they will receive medical care and can be given a good home, where someone will love them for the rest of their lives. Please don't wait.

There is no law against being a puppy miller or an irresponsible pet owner or pet store owner. As long as no laws are broken, there is little you can do except not support her with purchases and let others know not to support her with purchases as well. If she has no one buying her 'wares' then she won't produce them. If she is breaking area laws, then notify the authorities. I don't know of anyplace in the US or Canada that doesn't have SPCA - may be far away but if the animals are being improperly treated (and that means lacking in food, water, shelter, hygeine and having medical needs neglected) then they can step in. But the biggest deterent to people like this is loosing money -- if they can't sell what they produce then they won't produce it.

You need to turn this in to the police. It is against the law to keep animals in those conditions and whoever owns the place could go to jail for quite a while. Another thing the police can do is make sure that that person cannot won animals anymore-much less breed them!

yes, you should call animal control.

You can also contact the American Kennel Club, if the breeder states they are a member of AKC then the Kennel Club will act quickly and respond to shutting down the mill.

Good luck.

You need to call your local Humane Society. They will be able to help you or tell you who you should call. If it is that bad then the owner should be shut down and fined/jail. Step up and help the animals!!! Abuse is so wrong!

Call your local humane society. Ask them who else you can call. Make sure you get all the lady's info, like phone number and address if you can.

good for you for at least caring enough to ask what to do. And even better if you do s/thing about it.

I would call Animal Control or the SPCA and report them. That is cruel and inhumane treatment. Do it right away and don't let the authorities tell you they can't do anything about it either.
Good luck.

Call your nearest Humane Society or SPCA. Lacking that, call your sheriff's department and file a complaint of animal cruelty. It will be investigated.
