In many people's mind you have this argument:
My dog eats poop and licks his butt, why does it matter what I feed him? Besides if you can get it at Walmart (where they by THEIR food) it has to be good right?
Seems logical to me.
Mainly it's about education. Look at the questions on here. Do you think the general public knows about good food for their dogs?
And honestly some people can't afford anything any better. I guess that beats NOT feeding the dog.

You know, some people really can't afford much better than that. I actually take donated food that we get at the shelter to many people. There are some people that can't afford better.
The situations vary. Some have lost their jobs, some are "slow" and on disability. The reasons are many. None of the people I deal with are just cheap. They all take as good care of their dog that they can. They will go to the vet if needed, they use the vaccine clinics for shots, they use low cost spay/neuter. The dogs are happy, healthy and doing fine.
Should they be lectured on better food???? It would do no good.
Also, if people have been buying and feeding it to their dog for years and it is doing fine....what motivation do they have to change???????? Sure these foods are not the best. I would not feed Ol Roy, but that does not mean that they love their dog less than you do.
There is a dog down the street that has eaten Kibbles and Bits for YEARS!!!! The dog is in great shape. The vet says it is in great shape. Why should they change???
I really get sick for people thinking that the love for the dog is only equal to the price you pay for a bag of food.
I also bet that half the people who "preach" certain super premium food don't really feed that themselves!!!!!

money is a big factor.(honestly i'd rather see the dog fed crappy food then nothing.)
figures i eat off brands why not the dog
lack of knowing or being able to understand all the terms used in dog foods.
few see that corn or wheat are fillers and not part of what a dog needs. scary but true.
if it is feed with table scraps of meat from left over roast. chicken ect it makes it less crappy.....
when the recall happened (I knew corn and stuff where filler before that) i got alot of info on what all those terms mean and some really bad presevitives that they put in pet food.
I lost 2 cats to the recall. it had to the recall. an unaltered male got a blockage then an alter one got it with in one week of each other. when i was at the vets there was 3 other dogs 4 other male cats with a UTI type problem(before the recall. and the vet joked "there must be something in the water" she was close...) ;(

Because people don't think about proper nutrition for their pets.
We feed a good brand, one of the top ranked. It was suggested by our vet (nope, not science diet or iams) for an elderly dog. After seeing the ingredients and doing some more research, we decided it would be good for the younger dogs in our home too. We're quite happy with it and I doubt we'd ever change. I sure as heck won't buy the crap brands. Might as well feed table scraps if you're doing that.

maybe its all they can afford. Or they only make enough to buy cheap food like that.
I hate that food its gross.
I will never feed my dogs Ol roy even if I didn't have the money for any thing else.I would find a way to feed them better.

Ol' Roy?? Is that really a food?? I suppose you buy that sort of stuff at Walmart? hehe
I'm guessing people who buy this have no clue about nutrition...they are only interested in spending the very least on food for their dog....I'm sure they are spending less (or not spending at all) on other things for their dog as well.
Add: I'm totally laughing at DP's answer!! She couldn't have said it better! I wish I could give her more than one thumbs up for that answer!

Stupid reasons.
1.) cheap
2.) easily available at Wal-Mart
3.) dog isn't dying of it, so why change?
4.) don't care
It doesn't make sense to me, either. Once, when I didn't know better, I bought my dog a big container full of Ol' Roy biscuits. Then I researched about dog food, realized Ol' Roy was 100% crap, and tossed the biscuits out.

I just asked a question about dog food brands *wait for post*
The answer is...some people just don't know. I really had no clue how bad some foods were. When I first adopted my older dog, I bought him a bag of Ol'Roy milkbones. I didn't know they were bad. I kind of figured it out when the dog (who usually has a vacuum cleaner for a mouth) didn't even want to eat them.
But the good thing is...you can always pass your knowledge on!
