Well start with the basics, everyone needs soxs and shoes, underpants. Then go on to pants and shirts, jackets. All guys need at least one nice suit and couple of ties. Then a nice dress coat, and one for everyday, lighter for fall and heavier for winter.
I reccomend speparates because it's easier to mix and match. Go with basic colors. Don't go crazy on the patterns, a nice simple stripe is good. Keep pants in neutral colors, black, grey, brown, tan and blue denim also counts.
Since it's easier to figure this all out if you see it, there are a few shows on TV that can help. TLCs What Not to Wear (on Fridays) and Tim Gunn's Guide to Style on Bravo (I think that's on Thursdays)

Pick different colors for different days of the week;
for example
tuesday my clothing will be based on blue
it also dosn't have to be colors.
if you need to record it somehow make a bar graph
