peculiar to 'advanced' countries '......or let's just say there's little or no such in third world countries. I mean, sure people still get attacked in third world countries like mine.. but not in such methodical ways ala the fictional Hannibal Lecter... or the very real BTK (he was very methodical), Dahmer, Bundy or that one in Palo Alto (Ramirez) who killed my aunt years ago. I think there are such cases in some European countries, too. Do you think that social pressures in an advanced society has something to do with it? Any thoughts on this one?

Easy, guys. No toruble brewing here. I aksed the same question to our FBI lecturer some time back. And even he himself noticed that way back then. But despite all the years and the training he had, he agreed that he himself was baffled by that fact. By the way, he profiles serial killers and was one of those who pinned down BTK

I have pored over records of some killings here. Most were done for different reasons. None of them was made for the pleasure of doing so. The unsolved ones never indicated any pattern nor any signs of torture for the pleasure of the tormentor.

you have a valid point. I would tend to agree with you regarding social preassure, but there are a few problems with that theory...

jack the ripper lived in a time when life was arguably a lot easier.

Dracula (who wasnt a real vampire, but was a serial killer) lived in medival times (i think).

I think maybe there is less media coverage in less modern countries.

Maybe 3rd world nations arent as fascinated by violence and murder...

Good question though....

The problem with third world countries is the communication systems, both between law enforcement agencies and with the media. In western countries, serial killings are sensationalized and blasted everywhere in the media. In third world countries, people are too worried about how they will eat, or whether they will be killed by TB, or malaria, etc. to get worked up over a serial killer. Not to mention the police are A. much more brutal and less restrained in dealing with criminals, B. more corrupt and C. Less well trained to deal with or even recognize serial killers. A serial killer could much more easily do whatever he wanted in a third world country than an advanced nation, because the forensic technology is simply not available to solve a series of crimes of that sort, or even to link them together.

Serial killers are neither new nor unique. I have absolutely no doubt that they have plagued every civilization since ancient Egypt and before. as for third world countries, they are without a doubt not immune. The only thing from our point of view that is new and different is the amount of media attention some of them get. I know of two serial killings in the Waterloo, Iowa metro area (one the Lane, Kniss killings in Waterloo, the other a series of killings in the Bremer County area which to my knowledge are still unsolved.) that were not mentioned outside of the state of Iowa. People kill people all over the world, unless it is a celebrity or a have killing a have not, no one notices.

Two things: More effective law enforcement forces these guys to be more creative and disciplined. Also, it's less likely in a really underdeveloped region that anyone would even notice the pattern. Partly due to the lack of training, and partly due to the higher level of random violence and social unrest.

Also, it's possible that the media just doesn't shout it from the roof tops there like they do here.

You read too much modern literature. Serial killers have always been around, we in the US are merely better able to catalog them. If Ramirez set his sights lower on the economic scale he never would have been caught. Bundy chose white college girls(economic mistake). BTK dude seems to have given himself up. Think further--there have to be better organized killers than that. There are.

There probably are serial killers less advanced places, but in less advanced places, no one recognizes what is happening, and everyone (except the killer) knows only that there are a lot of murders, not that the same person is behind them all.
