Is tipping a pet sitter common practice? I have a pet sitter who takes care of our 3 small dogs when we take extended weekend vacations. She charges a daily rate, but I wonder if I should also be tipping her, too (15-20%)? She is the owner and only employee of her company, so I don't know if that matters. If you are a pet sitter, I'd also love to hear what you think. Thanks!

i guess i would tip her the 15-20%.
since it's not too often you use her services, that would be the appropriate thing to do.

Here's how I figure if a person deserves a tip or not. When a person provides a service for which I am paying, I expect a good job but if that person does an excellent job and exceeds my expectations then they will get a tip. If the pet sitter is doing the job you pay her to do then that should be sufficient but if she's "going above and beyond" then yes, you should give her a tip. I would say that an extra couple of bucks a day would be plenty.

Actually, it may be more common than you think! Many homes give tips if the sitter has done a good or great job, along with their daily rate payment.

But when it comes down to it, it's really up to you. Do you believe they deserve a tip?

Hope this helps!

you didn't say how many days this covered. no, i don't think the sitter needs to be tipped but it's your fault she took the money. if you just leave money without specifying what it's for, then she was not out of line for taking it and it was completely logical for her to think it was for her. she's not a mind reader. you should have been prepared and made sure you had 3x's enough pet food before you leave. it's not her job to go to the store for you. if you expect that, then yes, she absolutely does deserve a hefty tip.

If I were a pet sitter, I would tell you up front what I thought was fair payment for my services, and expect that amount. That's the way a business person operates in our culture. There's no reason to make a customer guess about these things.

They chose their profession not you. Next thing you know we will have to start tipping the mailman, street sweepers. Doctors, lawyers. Here is a good tip. Tell them to plant their corn during a full moon.

I probably would because I would want that person to always remember to take extra special care of my pets!
