I think it is because there is such a overpopulation of cats already at animal shelters. The ratio of cats to dogs is staggering in certain cities. I guess some people just want to try to give all those other cats a home..I understand that and I understand you wanting kitties from a animal you love..but maybe it would be best if you adopted a kitten.

that its not you don't love YOUR cat, but if you just an ounce of care for entire welfare of cats, you would have her spayed BEFORE she has any litters. Do you have 3-6 people diligently waiting to adopt the kittens once born, and are YOU going to make sure that all of them will spay and neuter these kittens? If not, then they will start multiplying etc(that is something I always wanted to ask any of these people who answered and say they allow there cat to have at least one litter)
And even if you did, isn't that cruel and heartless to the other kittens already in shelters that could have been adopted and are now being put down and euthanized because instead of being saved, people are waiting to adopt the offspring from your cat.

Just take a step back and look at the big picture. There will always be wild and feral cats that people don't know about and are multiplying (although TNR is starting to help decrease this number) But you have a chance to make a difference in this world by spaying your cat before it contributes to the problem.

Think long a hard of the millions of homeless cats out there
and the poor young innocent kittens being put down in shelters because nobody wanted them before you feel its OK for your cat to have litters

You can make a difference, and I have faith you will make the right decision.

You need to go volunteer at a local animal shelter to truly understand the importance of spaying your kitty. Think of the kittens. If she has five kittens, and then they all have five kittens, and then THEY all have five kittens...here, look at this:
Why Neutering And Spaying Are So Important

If you have two breeding cats, and they have 2 litters a year and those kitties have two litters a year each, do you know that in 10 years, there will be over 80,000,000 cats?

And now that you know this, how many do you think find a good home, let alone a home at all?

(Hint: Not many....)

Some people say they have found homes for their cats' litters. That may sound great, but for every kitten born, about 5 die in a shelter. That kitten who died could have found a home with that very someone who decided to get one of their friend's litter instead of saving the kitten from the shelter. That poor kitten didn't have a chance in the world.

There are even health benefits to altering: Spaying a female helps to prevent mammary tumors (and pregnancy as well...). Plus, spaying stops the rolling and howling that females do when they are in heat, which can be annoying!

I was the euthanasia technician for our local shelter and let me tell you this. I put more kittens and cats to "sleep' than I did dogs, even though this is a big problem with unwanted dogs too. We had what we called kitten season there, we would try everything, 2 for 1 adoptions, discounted adoptions...and there are not enough homes to go around, there just aren't!!
My heart would break everytime I had to put some cute, playful kitten down, especially when they would be purring and wanting to be petted, trying to play with my hands, my hands that were holding the needle that would kill them in just a few seconds. You have no idea how selfish it is to let your cat have a litter, there is no other way to look at this. You say you love your cat to death and I believe you. So why dont you go to the shelter and find a kitten or cat that needs to be loved the way you love your kitty? You would never regret it. Please, I am begging you to reconsider on behalf of every kitten or cat who is sleeping in a metal cage tonight instead of on a warm bed next to somebody who loves them!!! Dont be one of those people who add to the cat overpopulation! Be part of the solution, not the problem, please please please!

Well do you L O V E the fact that if you allow your cat to breed then however many kittens she has will be that more cats euthanized at a shelter? Do you L O V E your cat enough to realize that pregnancy for cats come sometimes go wrong and kill the cat?

Do me a favour - go to your local kill shelter. Look around at all the homeless cats and kittens. Read their bios. See how long they've been waiting for homes. Then think about your cat adding five or six more cats to this world. And how five or six of those cats you saw will be put to death BECAUSE OF YOU. Can you live with that? I sure couldn't.

"If we all got out cats spayed as soon as we got them, eventually there will be no cats! How sad would that be. They need to keep breading to keep the population up!!"

kaitsta00 - that's a ridiculous comment! Do you know how many years it would take just to have all the homeless pets find homes????

Animals do NOT need to have a litter before they are spayed. We all just encourage spaying all cats asap because there are thousands of kittens in the world who don't have a home so they are killed. You'll be doing the world a favor by not allowing a litter. That's just that many more that potentially won't have a good home. We know you LOVE your cat, so do the right thing. It will keep her healthier for life and she'll be a better companion.

Because tens of thousands of cats are euthanized each year, because there just aren't enough homes for them. Why does you cat need to have at least 1 litter of kittens? What purpose would it serve? Are you going to keep those kittens? And if there are females let them have kittens and keep those kittens too? And so on? How are you going to guarantee good homes for those kittens? Be sure the people you give them to, don't give them away to a shelter or cruel person somewhere down the line?

See how it all multiplies. You may think not having her spayed isn't a problem but what about those kittens and their possible offspring? Are you going to be responsible for them all for the rest of their lives?

Aw hun, I understand, but I also know where a lot of these people are coming from. My little boy, he's about 3 months now, I got him from a shelter, and he had been abandoned prior to me adopting him. He was about 2 months when I got him, he'd had such a tough little life, now I love him so much, I hope he never remembers how hard he had it. Don't put anymore little sweethearts through that. Even if you find them homes, what happens if the people you give the kitties to move into a home that doesn't allow cats? Then they have to give the cat away, or put it into a shelter, think really hard about the good and bads about this, cause rushing into something causes dire consequences.

it's probably because there are plenty of unwanted kittens out there, we have kittens dropped on us all the time where I work because they can't find homes or people just didn't want to try to get rid of the kittens that their unspayed cat had. We actually have 2 beautiful black and white female kittens now, we've had them for about a month, and nobody will take them. It is also unhealthy, and risky to have an unspayed female. If you have them spayed before their first heat cycle, the chance of breast cancer when they get older is almost eliminated. As well as ovarian cancer and uteran cancer. Your cat also has the risk of getting very sick with her kittens, and them actually causing her harm if something were to go wrong, as well as getting a deadly condition where her uterus fills with puss. The best thing to do is to get her fixed before she even has a chance to have a litter, that is what will keep her healthy.

There are so many cats in the world that are abandoned and need homes, Think about that if your cat had kittens and they ended up in an animal shelter, they could be put down for the fact that no one wants them. How would that make you feel? I think it is in best interest to spay cats because not everyone is willing to give them the proper care and attetion cats need.

As long as you have good homes for the kittens you want your cat to have, fine. The more important issue is why do you want your cat to have kittens? So you and your kids can see the miracle of birth? Because if you have kids, then perhaps you can recall how damn uncomfortable and painful it was.

I'm sorry if this offends you. It's just that I see a helluva lot of ignorance based on the misperception that a cat has to have kittens to be fulfilled as an animal. There are already too many unwanted, unloved, uncared-for and dying cats in the world.
