As a whole we're easily the most peaceful people on the face of the planet. There is no historical evidence, both ancient or contemporary, that anyone ever commited any atrocity in the name of Atheism. We don't try to force our beliefs on others or condemn people that live in an alternate lifestyle. So, why are we generally disliked?
And, before any of you Christians that may be reading this gets an orgasm for the chance of accusing an Atheist of having a persecution complex, I have no such complex. This is a genuine question.

some fine examples of "christian love" are shown in the answers to this. From those answers I think it should be obvious that they are petty, insecure, and unable to back up their belief with anything of substance. As for the poster that listed communists as committing atrocities...they did NOT do it in the name of atheism, rather in the name of their politics. Let's not forget that Hitler was a catholic and from that basis formed his hatred of jews, let's not forget the inquisition and the tortures done to "bring heathens to christ", and let's not forget the wars still being waged in the so-called holy lands to keep the other side from having possession of what you covet.

I don't really think you can speak for all atheists anymore than I can speak for all Christians. I guess if you say things like "before any of you Christians that may be reading this gets an orgasm for the chance of accusing an atheist of having a persecution complex", you may be a little annoying.
Maybe you're just annoying and atheists don't like you either.
Maybe not, I'm just sayin'. I can't think of any Atheists that I flat out dislike. I feel sorry for people who face eternity in Hell.
Oh, I would consider the persecution of Christians pretty much the same thing as an atrocity in the name of Atheism. Close enough for me.

I never realized you were disliked! I have no problem with atheists (I am a Christian). I do find some atheists posting here can be rude and vulgar. but that's just them. People of all beliefs can be rude and vulgar. As far as the atrocities in the name of Atheism I would cite the purging in the Cultural Revolution of China as pretty bad. Humans are human first I guess. No one group has a corner on the cruelty market.

Atheists don't believe that Jesus existed and also do not believe in sin. Rather we are aware that Jesus most likely did not exist (if he did he wasn't god) and that sin is a man made concept used to control the way people behave. Are fundamentalist Christians incapable of understanding what an atheist is?

This is Tibarbi not condemning or forcing her beliefs on others.

Who's sarcastic and self-righteous now?

I really don't know why people feel the need to put down the beliefs of others in order to validate their own. I notice some Christians on here slamming other Christians even by saying oh they're not "true Christians". I often come away feeling very sorry for them because they seem so miserable and hate-filled. I never come away thinking "where can I join that religion">

I notice it's the loud people "yelling" back and forth (Christians and athiests) that are getting everyone's panties in a bunch.

I hope everyone realizes that not all Christians (nor all atheists) are like that. Quite a few of us aren't interested in shoving any doctrine down ANYBODY's throats. Most of the time I don't bother getting in on the questions where people are just being mean. It's not worth my energy.

Gosh, and I was so looking forward to that orgasm...I don't "dislike Atheists." Some of my best friends are Atheist..haha! Anyway, if I don't get the orgasm, at least let me generalize and stereotype, (two mainstays of R&S). Perhaps it's the intellectual condescension and ridicule of what people feel and believe deeply...Some, and I emphasize some, Atheists tend to be disrpesctful and just as strident and hateful as the most narrow minded fundamentalist.

It's the tribal nature of humanity to fear and hate "outsiders". This is aggravated in American society because there is no political backing for atheists so the theists feel unconstrained to voice and occasionally act out there prejudices against atheists. The truth is that the percentage of atheists among political leaders, business leaders and even RELIGIOUS leaders is much higher than in the general population.

Well, most other religions try to solicite people into their beliefs, and usually its because they think their views are best. It's the straight-and -narrow christians that believe only one interpretation of the bible exists, and that everything that is in the bible is justified and matches up. The same goes for islamic, jewish, basically all religions that follow some written word, ther are always people who never get the true teachings of the bible because they take it too literally. The true meaning of an intellectual is openmindedness

Note to Christian who stated it was her job to spread the Gospel.

I'm pretty sure that's similar, if not exactly the same as forcing beliefs onto people.

Anyway, it's the morons who persecute the atheists. The smart ones state their view, leave it at that, and engage in some healthy, non-aggressive debate.
