im writing a poem
and wanted the writing to be shaped in a swirl

I think you're talking about the words swirling, not the letters, like some of Lewis Carroll's poems. Sorry, but there aren't any fonts to do that. Word Art might give you some tools.

To get to Word Art

1. Click the View->Toolbars menu item.
2. Click the WordArt menu.

If you are using a recent version of Word, such as 2003 for example simply go to the formatting toolbar and click the Font drop down list.

All font names show up in the actual font shape. Just choose what script type font you like.
