There is only 1 Lab breed but Labs bred for hunting such as my Choc. male often are different in shape than a show Lab. Many other hunting breeds have 2 different styles, English Setters, Cockers, pointers come to mind. In general the field bred Labs are taller and less stock than a show bred Lab and have less hair. (Differences in the physical build of the dog have arisen as a result of specialised breeding. Dogs bred for hunting and field-trial work are selected first for working ability, whereas dogs bred to compete for show championships are selected for what judges look for in the show ring. There are significant differences between field and trial-bred (sometimes referred to as "American") and show-bred (or "English") lines of Labradors. In general, show-bred Labs are heavier, slightly shorter-bodied, and have a thicker coat and tail. Field Labs are generally longer legged, lighter, and more lithe in build. In the head, show Labs tend to have broader heads, better defined stops, and more powerful necks, while field Labs have lighter and slightly narrower heads with longer muzzles.[20][21] Field-bred Labs are commonly higher energy and more high-strung compared to the show-bred Lab, and as a consequence may be more suited to working relationships rather than being a "family pet."[20][21] Of course, each individual dog differs. Some breeders, especially those specialising in the field type, feel that breed shows do not adequately recognise their type of dog. There is also occasional debate regarding officially splitting the breed.[22])

There is really only 1 lab and that is the true breed standard as defined by the akc.
What you see out and about more often than not are what many people "refer" to as the American style or Field labs. They are taller, more lanky, tend to have a slightly thinner face.
The English or Bench are shorter, stockier and more like a keg of beer on legs.
Neither term are really correct but it's something you commonly hear. Most people would not recognize a well bred lab if they saw one because the market is flooded with poorly bred dogs.
Check out this site - it's one of the best sites for and about labs on the Net. She is just wonderful.

She has a ton of great articles on health issues as well. I'm not advocating a breeder - I'm just telling you this woman is an encyclopedia...

There are 2 'types' of Labs.
American labs are taller and leggier, and have longer heads.
English labs are short, stocky, and have a heavy square head.
Both labs have the same colors and hair type, and the same personality.

The terms English and American are silly and do no justice to the breed.
You will find field bred labs (taller and leaner) in both the US and in England.
You will also find show bred labs in both countries.
Just as there are more Lab lovers than any other breed, there are more opinions on proper type than any other breed.
These two were both Triple Champions, so they look pretty correct to me.

No real name. Show labs are usually stockier with the shorter legs and barrel chest. Where hunting labs are breed more for longer legs and more leaner body. The "American" would be the show lab. I'm not exactly sure on what the English lab looks like, haven't watched my crufts carefully.
