if you don't want sea duty, then don't join the Navy, Coast Guard or Marines. If you want to stay in the US, don't join any of 'em. they ALL deploy. In fact every Army soldier will do a tour OCONUS.. either Korea or Germany. and that doesn't count deployments.

Unfortunately, there is no best branch that could guarantee that. Every branch deploys its members overseas in some capacity.

If you don't want to be on a ship, you might consider the USAF or the Army. The Navy, Marines and Coast Guard obviously have ships that you could serve on. (The Marines deploy aboard Naval ships.)

It would probably be best to see what you mostly would be interested in as a job (MOS) rather than what you won't have to do. Know what I mean?

Joining the military is honorable and rewarding (in many ways). However, if you go into it with the thoughts of how can you avoid certain things (before you've even begun), then maybe it's not the best option for you.

Good luck in finding the answer you seek!

Air Force is your best bet. But there is no garuntee you wont get sent "overseas". I am in the Air Force and the deployments are 6 months long and tend to be cushy. If you want the least chance to deploy over to Iraq or Afganistan then get a desk job. With the Air Force I know you can get a garunteed job, there is usually a waiting period ( I had to wait 7 months for Air Traffic Control) but they wont screw you on that deal. NEVER EVER EVER go "General Open" ... if a recruiter ever tells you thats your "best bet" to get what you want he's lying. Stick to your guns, get the job you want and only sign a paper that has that job listed. But keep in mind you may get sent overseas to somewhere like Germany, Italy, England or other countries like that. They also have 1 year long tours in Korea and a few other countries but most single people love it in Korea. Good luck.

You can get really proficient at playing a musical instrument and audition to join the Marine Band in Washington, the Navy Band in Washington or the Air Force Band in Washington. They may be the only folks in uniform who don't go aboard ship or deploy to combat zones, besides the bone bank technicians at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland.

The Air Force is your best bet. They use power projection quite a bit, and if you enlist to work on a CONUS-based aircraft system which flies it's sorties from the US, then you'll probably spend most of your career in CONUS.

Ask your Air Force Recruiter about it.

Otherwise, join the Public Health Service...if you're a doctor, nurse, or similar.

Well, if you rule out overseas service and ships, that pretty much leaves the Boy Scouts and Civil Air Patrol.
