Tim and Lester both have good advice.

Let me add an alternative strenghtening exercise for the shins. Lie face down in bed with your toes hanging over the foot of the bed. Pull your toes upward towards you against the resistance of the mattress. Repeat this several times.

Ice is not necessarily a bad thing. I would wait for a good half an hour before applying it, though. Another thing you can do is to do muscle strengthening exercises for the muscles on the front of your shins. You can sit down and flex your toes toward your shins as hard as you can and hold for a count of 10. This should help more than the ice.

Your coach is correct. Ice them for 10 to 15 minutes after training. Do not put the ice directly on your legs.

Use a damp cloth between the skin and the ice pack.

Try to stretch your lower legs, and massage them before and after running.
