If you look around, you'll see a lot of women who just wear a wedding band. Clearly, they managed to be engaged without a ring!

Of course!
You only need one asking to marry them and the other to say yes in order to be engaged.
Lots of people get engaged without a ring. Doesn't make their relationship any less important and relevant than those who do have engagement rings.

Absolutely. My personal favorite is the engagement tattoo. Instead of a metal band, you tattoo your fiance's name around your finger. Pamela Anderson did this with Tommy Lee. I would only do this if you plan on your marriage lasting longer than the typical Hollywood affair. But, it does show that you are in the relationship for the long haul, and can cost as little as $75.
Many people get engaged and then go ring shopping, sometimes for months, before they find the "right" ring.

An engagement can be whatever you want it to be. There does not have to be a ring in order to be engaged. If you feel an emotional connection than you can be engaged if you wish. The ring is something that symbolized a beginning and no end...

Of course you can.
Once two adults agree to marry each other, they are engaged. The ring is an extraneous symbol, and not necessary.
Only the upper classes of society would even bother with rings, until very recently.
Some religions even forbid jewelry altogether- are those engaged couples not really engaged?
People are just so easily swayed these days by materialistic marketing, that they confuse the commitment itself with the SYMBOL of that commitment.

Of course you can, there are many cultures around the world that do not have engagement rings and wedding rings, it's just that OUR culture seems to think that material things like jewellery are a sign of how much someone loves you (the bigger the rock, the more he loves you) Personally I think that is rubbish, and that people should pour more time and energy into their relationship.

Personally I like the ring, but I have friends who would prefer not having a ring. It doesn't matter. A ring is a ring. Having a ring doesn't mean your marriage is going to last longer, or anything. Its just a ring.

It's not the ring, per se, which is important, but the symbolism of it. It can be a $20 little silver ring, or anything!
My mom used to say you have to have a ring and a date to be officially engaged, and I think that woman had a lot of wisdom!

If you believe that it can, it can. A ring is just a material thing... it is only a symbol of a commitment and connection that two people have. Just because there is no ring involved, doesn't mean that this connection does not exist or anything like that.

My wife is from another country, and I asked her to marry me on the phone. We were engaged right then, but I still flew down to Bogota the next week and took her a heart shaped diamond engagement ring. But, I guess that means I am only half old-fashioned.
