Jesus was a spirit creature; he gave up that form to become "a little less than the angels", and be born a fleshly man; like all living things, he was then a living soul, existing by means of God's spirit, or vital force (like electricity); when his body died, that spirit became God's property again, just like what happens to all of us; he is the 'first born of the dead', in that he was the first creation to be brought to heavenly life after fleshly death, a spirit, incorruptable.
