The earliest Christian commentaries (written in the second century) on the Old Testament specifically dismiss a literal reading of the creation account in Genesis, and St. Augustine of Hippo, during the fifth century, went so far as to say that those who read the creation account so literally were ''foolish.'' The Epistle of Barnabas (c. 150 AD), which was hailed by Clement of Rome, even designates the creation story more as prophecy than history. Look for the deeper meaning behind things when you read Christian Scripture. For example, the Hebrew word for the ''rib'' that God took from Adam can also be used to describe a supporting beam in a house or building. The old expression states that ''behind every strong man, you'll find a strong woman.'' Genesis has many lessons to teach about life and humanity's relationship with God and with each other. It's not a science book, nor is it intended to be read as one.

When it say that God took Adam's rib it does literal mean rib. God take Adam rib and genetically alter Adam's DNA into a woman and then he made Eve.

So Adam went to God and said, "Hey God, I'm lonely"
God told Adam, "I will make you a companion - she will be called woman... and she will obey your every command... be attentive to your every need... and always be there at your beck and call and you will be the center of her universe for all time."
Adam says, "Wow, that sounds great!"
God continues, "In order to give you this companion as I've described her to you... I will need to take an arm and a leg."
Adam thinks about a minute and responds, "...ummm, what can I get for a rib?"

Have you forgotten that God created the heavens and the earth?
He's fully capable of removing part of Adam's rib. What procedure he used is entirely moot. He's infinitely capable, that's all I need to know.
We're not talking about the paperboy here, we're talking God.
This is such a silly thing to argue about. To anybody with half their brain tied behind their back, it's obvious.
Your problem is you're trying so hard NOT to believe you're grasping at straws to make your case.
You've got your eyes closed so tight, you can't see the light.
Are you afraid that if you consider the Bible objectively that you might find some wisdom or truth there?
I highly recommend you step aside from your hate toward God because the hour is later than you think.

Probably just a metaphor....
But also, remember that males contain both female and male chromosomes (X, Y).... Women only contain the female chromosome (Y). So, everyone begins life in the womb as a female... If woman was created first, then as far as chromosomes go, the man could not be formed from her.... Not enough chromosones to work with.
St. Paul instructs Christians to love your wives, as you love yourself.... So, it doesn't matter who was made first, or how, or for what reason.... Women are equal to men, and most women that I know are much more intelligent!
(FOR --- Achille's Tendon --- brain fart / typo on my part... But ya know what I mean. I like what you said about the Buddhist belief in a sexless origin)
(FOR -- Follow The 9 -- I like what you added, asking if people don't take the Bible literally. It appears to me that the Bible goes back-and-forth between historical facts and metaphors.)
(FOR -- Follow The 9 -- Regarding the DNA you're questioning in the Bible.... Although coins are mentioned in the Bible, it doesn't tell us that they were part of an economy. That's common sense. Not everything must be spelled-out.)

God literally took out Adam's rib, but i don't think he needed tools. for instance, when God said "let there be light" and there was light...he didn't use any tools.

I doubt the Fundies will answer this one. My guess is that he "parted" the thorax (kind of like he did with the Red sea), and it just floated out, kind of like the way things used to float around on Bewitched.

Actually he put things in reverse in the beginning. Since all life is produced by the woman, I guess he had to change things back around later.

Funny.
I don't take that literally. I think it was referring to DNA. God formed a woman based on man's DNA, but altered it slightly.
Edit: Some of us do take the Bible literally. Some don't. I'm one of those that take some parts literally, but not others. How do I go about deciding which? Well, that's another question, isn't it.
