In many batteries the label is also the insulator. When you remove the label you expose the anode which means anything metal comming in contact with the battery has the potential to short the battery out - and that includes another battery.

In most cases very little, after all it is just a sticker, sometimes a label is used as insulation material but for very little else then that.
